Orr wins Home Hardware Top Prospects Game
London – Robbie Schremp scored a highlight reel goal and picked up a pair of assists in front of his home crowd to lead Team Orr to a 6-2 win over Team Cherry in the Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game at the John Labatt Centre on Wednesday.
Schremp, the first overall pick in the OHL Priority Selection in 2002, assisted on goals by Blake Comeau of the Kelowna Rockets and Andrew Ladd of the Calgary Hitmen to give Orr a two-goal lead just over five minutes into the game.
Approaching the midway point of the opening period, Schremp picked up the puck just inside the blueline, worked his way around Rimouski Oceanic defenceman Michal Sersen and roofed a wrist shot over Shawinigan Cataractes goaltender Julian Ellis.
Adam Berti (Oshawa Generals) and Wojtek Wolski (Brampton Battalion) pulled Cherry to within one goal by the end of the opening frame. Eric Hunter (Prince George Cougars), Boris Valabik (Kitchener Rangers) and Bruce Graham (Moncton Wildcats) also scored in the win.
Schremp broke in on a pair of defenders early in the third period looking for his second goal of the game. He scooped the puck up and spun around with the puck on the blade of his stick, whipping it over his shoulder at Orr goaltender David Shantz (Mississauga IceDogs). The puck went over the goal, but drew a stunned reaction from the 8,835 in attendance.
“I just hope he (Cherry) doesn’t think I’m a hot dog,” Schremp said in the post-game media conference.
“I said it would be OK in a one-goal game,” Cherry replied. “I still didn’t like it.”
“I want to win. I really do,” said Cherry, who trails Orr 5-3 in the series. “It’s like Brian (Kilrea) said to the guys near the end – don’t quit. They (NHL scouts) are watching to see if you quit.”
The 2005 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game will be played in Vancouver, British Columbia.
