York-Simcoe’s Arniotis makes 54-save performance in thrilling OT victory
The York Simcoe Express edged out the Toronto Jr. Canadiens 3-2 in overtime, securing a much-needed two points.
The Express jumped out to an early lead with two power-play goals from Ben Veitch (3), followed closely by Brayden Blyth (1). Despite being outshot 56 to 23, the Express held their ground, largely due to the stellar performance of goaltender Lucian Arniotis, who made 54 saves on 56 shots.
The Jr. Canadiens fought back in the second and third periods, with goals from Benjamin Maharaj (1) and Keaton Ardagh (2), tying the game late and sending it into overtime.
However, it was Ryerson Edgar (4) who sealed the win for the Express, scoring the game-winning marker in overtime. Reflecting on his decisive play, Edgar said, “I just called for it up the wall, got a great pass, beat my man to the net, and tucked it on the backhand.”
With this crucial win, the Express gained momentum heading into their next game, as Edgar added, “We got some good momentum, so we’re gonna try and keep it going.”
Both teams will now turn their focus to their final round-robin games tomorrow, in which their quarter-final hopes hang in the balance.
