Mbuyi’s record-tying six points lead Marlboros to Quarters
Pierce Mbuyi (4G, 2A) exploded offensively as he tied the single game points record at the OHL Cup with six, leading the Toronto Marlboros to a 6-1 win over Ottawa Myers Automotive, punching the Marlies’ ticket to the quarterfinals.
In what was a close game early, Mbuyi (6) opened the scoring for the Marlboros after receiving a pass from linemate Adam Valentini to send Mbuyi in alone at the net. Myers would respond shortly after with a goal of their own from forward Thomas Vandenberg (3). The Marlboros would then score five unanswered with goals from Anthony Figliomeni (1), Valentini (4), and Mbuyi to pull away from Myers.
Mbuyi becomes just the fifth player to have six points in a single game, joining the likes of Barclay Goodrow (York Simcoe Express ’09), Tyler Seguin (Toronto Nationals ’08), Taylor Hall (Greater Kingston Predators ’07), and Luke Pither (Clarington Toros ’05). He has 13 points (6-7–13) through just four games.
While he may get the spotlight with such a great performance, Mbuyi is quick to heap praise onto his teammates, “I mean I think my teammates really helped me out a lot today, we came together as a group, really worked hard as a team, and I was fortunate to be able to bury a couple.”
“This has been our goal since the start of the year, we’re looking to get to the top of the mountain and getting to quarters is another step along the way, we’re excited to get going tomorrow,” said Mbuyi. After a tough loss in their opening game, his team is looking forward to playing in the quarterfinals.
The Marlboros will play the first place team from the Shanahan Division tomorrow morning in quarterfinal #1 at 10:30am.
Myers Automotive finish with a record of 1-2-1 with an overtime loss to Peterborough and a tie against London. Henry Doucet (2G, 4A) led Ottawa in scoring with six points in four games.
