Hawks clip Gryphons 2-1
A choppy, chippy, hard-fought game between two closely matched opponents went the way of the Cambridge Hawks on Thursday as they took a 2-1 win over the Guelph Gryphons.
The Hawks prevailed despite surrendering 10 power play opportunities, holding Guelph to just one goal in that span as netminder Vance Meyer stopped 21 of 22 to help Cambridge improve to 2-1-0 in the showcase.
Cambridge’s Cooper Walker (1) opened the scoring with 2:55 left in the opening frame on an assist from Noah Kirk. The Guelph power play struck with three seconds left on the first period clock to knot things at one as Brett Allen (2) found the back of the net from Logan Morrison and Jackson Kirk.
Tyler Healey (2) stepped up to score a nice goal for the game winner with 1:38 left in the second, getting help from Joseph Serpa and Dante Pellegrino.
The two clubs combined for 15 power play opportunities as goaltenders Vance Meyer and Christian Linton faced good scoring chances both ways. Linton turned aside 28 shots in the Guelph crease.
Cambridge (2-1-0) will be tested Friday morning when they face the Toronto Marlboros (2-0-0) at 9:45am. Guelph (1-2-0) takes on the Wild Card entry Sun County Panthers (1-0-0) at 10:15am on Friday.
