Halton’s Sementsov secures 3-1 victory over Red Wings
The Halton Hurricanes started their OHL Cup campaign on a strong note, edging out a 3-1 victory over the Toronto Red Wings.
After a scoreless opening period, both teams looked to prevail in the middle frame. Aleksandr Sementsov (2) wasted no time putting the Hurricanes on the board with his first of the night. However, the Red Wings then responded midway through the frame on the power play, as forward Matthew Hong (1) capitalized to even the score.
But again, the Hurricanes quickly reclaimed control, with defenceman Colton D’Amico (1) restoring their lead just two minutes later with that would stand as the game-winner. His strong performance, which included a goal and an assist, earned him Player of the Game honours.
“We were just working. We got the puck in deep, and we were just going hard to the net, getting bodies in front, and putting shots on goal,” D’Amico said postgame.
D’Amico also stressed the significance of opening the tournament with a win. “The most important game of tournaments is the first one, and we got the win, so I feel like it’s gonna help us out a lot.”
Aleksandr Sementsov played a key role in the victory as well, scoring twice—including a crucial insurance goal in the third period.
Meanwhile, goaltender Cole Vreugdenhil was rock solid between the pipes, making 39 saves and allowing just one goal.
The Toronto Red Wings are set to hit the ice again tonight against the Detriot Little Caesars, while the Halton Hurricanes have the night off before facing the Huron Perth Lakers on Tuesday morning.
