Griffin dazzles in overtime as Waxers advance
Underage talent Owen Griffin scored a spectacular game winning goal as the Markham Waxers advanced to the OHL Cup Powered by Under Armour Quarter-Finals after beating the Brantford 99ers 2-1 in overtime. The Waxers advance to the quarters for the first time since their last championship in 2006.
Goaltenders Nate Gillis (Markham) and Justin Robinson (Brantford) each earned their second Player of the Game awards, with Gillis making 15 saves in the win while Robinson turned away 14.
Gabe Chiarot scored the lone goal for Brantford.
With a game-high two points, including an assist on the game winner, Nathan Aspinall talked about producing in such a big moment. “It was great, the team came together, the power play has been clicking, so we’re excited to keep it going.”
“I’ve been looking forward to this ever since novice, so we just got to keep it going tomorrow,” he added. A top prospect for the 2022 OHL Priority Selection Aspinall and his Waxers teammates have been looking forward to this event for a long time.
The Waxers will play the Shanahan Division winning cross-town rival Markham Majors in Quarter-Final number three Friday morning at 10:00 am. Brantford finishes the OHL Cup with a record of 2-2 with captain Lucas Karmiris (3-3-6) finishing with a team-high six points.
