Flyers and Kings settle for 3-3 tie
The Don Mills Flyers threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Thunder Bay Kings in the dying minutes but couldn’t solve goaltender Eric Vanska as the two clubs settled for a point each in a 3-3 draw.
Vanska turned aside 35 of the 38 shots he faced including a late Matthew Perciballi penalty shot to help the Kings weather the storm.
“I felt good out there but I had guys in front of me blocking shots,” said Vanska. “We came a long way to be here and we certainly didn’t want to go home empty-handed. We’ve got a point now and we’re playing to win against Barrie tomorrow.”
Mason Bazaluk (1) and Michael Goegan (1) scored second period goals to put Thunder Bay up 2-0 before Don Mills defenceman David Gucciardi (1) cut the lead in half prior to the end of the frame.
Kings forward Bryson Cataldo (1) reinstated the two-goal lead before the Flyers came charging back to tie on consecutive goals from Owen Saye (1, 2) just 1:35 apart.
Nicholas Palazzo made 24 saves in the Don Mills crease as the Flyers earned their first point to sit at 0-2-1 in the Subban Division.
Don Mills and Thunder Bay are both in action on Friday as the Flyers close out the round robin against Brantford (1-1-0) at 5:15pm. The Kings faceoff with the Barrie Colts (2-0-1) at 3:00pm.
