Aspinall collects four points as Waxers rally from slow start
Behind several multipoint performances, the Markham Waxers battled their way back from a 2-0 deficit to earn their second win of the OHL Cup Powered by Under Armour, beating the North York Rangers 5-2.
George Toroptsev (1) and Rowan Topp (1) got North York on the board early but that would be the extent of their offence as the Rangers fell to 0-3.
The Waxers responded with five unanswered as Nathan Aspinall led the way with a goal and three assists. Blueliner Frankie Marelli (2A) and underage standout Owen Griffin (1G, 1A) each had two points in the game, with Griffin scoring the game winning goal and earning player of the game honours.
Markham capitalized on the man advantage, going 3-for-4 in the game.
Knowing a spot in the quarterfinals is on the line tomorrow, Griffin talked about what it will take to get the win. “We just have to play our game, and if everyone does their job I think we can come out with the win.”
Markham will play their final round robin game against the currently undefeated Brantford 99ers tomorrow at 3:00 pm. North York will play the Niagara North Stars tomorrow at 10:15 am as they wrap up their round robin.
