2012 OHL Cup – Day 1 Results
The 2012 Ontario Hockey League Cup Showcase Tournament hosted by the Greater Toronto Hockey League opened Tuesday evening at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, ON, with four games on the schedule. A full 16-game schedule resumes on Wednesday morning.
2012 OHL Cup – Day 1 Results:
Game 1: Vaughan Kings 4 (1-0-0) vs. Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs 0 (0-1-0)
The GTHL’s Vaughan Kings opened the 2012 OHL Cup Showcase Tournament with a 4-0 win over OMHA Finalists the Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs in Division 4 action Tuesday night. Cameron Hackett earned the shutout victory in goal, and four different Kings had multi-point games including Justin Brack who earned Player of the Game honours with a goal and an assist. After a scoreless first period the Kings netted three in the middle frame with goals by Michael Dal Colle, Brack, and Marc Stevens. Mitch Marner put the game away with the fourth goal tallied just over a minute into the third period. Cale Allen and Dylan Sadowy each picked up two assists. Michael Caluori took the loss in goal for the Bulldogs.

Game 2: Toronto Marlboros 5 (1-0-0) vs. Southern Tier Admirals 3 (0-1-0)
The top ranked Toronto Marlies began defense of their OHL Cup title with a 5-3 win over the OMHA’s Southern Tier Admirals on Tuesday night to open action in Division 1. Connor McDavid broke a 2-2 tie midway through the second period with a power play goal, his second of the game, followed by unanswered goals from Jaden Lindo and Roland McKeown who each had multi-point games for the Marlies. Patrick Desjardins led the offensive charge for the Admirals with two points including the game’s first goal at 4:45 of the first period scored on the power play, later assisting on a shorthanded marker by Matt Gillard. Mathew Robson picked up the win in between the pipes for the Marlies.

Game 3: Mississauga Rebels 3 (1-0-0) vs. North York Rangers 0 (0-1-0)
The Mississauga Rebels won the first all-GTHL matchup of the 2012 OHL Cup cruising to a 3-0 win over the North York Rangers in Division 3 play Tuesday night. Defenceman Dylan Di Perna led the way offensively with three assists and Brett Hargrave scored a pair of goals for the Rebels including a power play marker late in the first period which held as the game-winner. David Miller added some insurance with another power play goal in the second period, while Robert Fabbri chipped in with two assists in the contest. Liam Herbst provided solid goaltending for the Rebels and earned the shutout victory.

Game 4 – Don Mills Flyers 6 (1-0-0) vs. Sun County Panthers 5 (0-1-0)
Joseph Berton broke a 5-5 tie with just over one minute to play in the third period to lift the GTHL’s Don Mills Flyers to a wild win over the ALLIANCE Finalists the Sun County Panthers in Division 2 action Tuesday night. A back and forth contest, the Panthers opened the scoring with a Scott Florence goal at 4:39 only to find themselves trailing 2-1 after the first period when Berton and Ryan Foss tallied for the Flyers. Both teams scored twice in the middle frame before Foss put the Flyers ahead by two with his second goal of the game at 2:15 of the third period. The Panthers battled back with a Jared Leslie goal just 27 seconds later to cut the Flyers lead to one, followed by the tying goal at 5:29 off the stick of Joe Manchurek. Berton’s game-winner was scored off a scramble past Matt Mancina who took the loss in goal for the Panthers, while Daniel LoPapa picked up the win. Berton had a three-point game behind four-point efforts from Foss and Dante Salituro who had four assists.
