67’s retire Brian Campbell’s #44
Ottawa, ON – The Ottawa 67’s retired former defenceman Brian Campbell‘s jersey prior to Friday night’s game against Barrie, hoisting his #44 to the rafters of The Arena at TD Place alongside other junior hockey royalty.
Campbell, who played 1,082 NHL games after four years with the 67’s from 1995 to 1999, joins Denis Potvin (7), Doug Wilson (7), Peter Lee (14) and Bobby Smith (15) as players to have their numbers immortalized inside the former Civic Centre.
“The 67’s take a lot of pride in the names that go up there, it’s elite company to be part of,” said Campbell. “It was a fun time playing here and we had a lot of success. It’s an honour to be recognized in this way.”
The 1998-99 season was a special one for Campbell, who earned numerous accolades including CHL Player of the Year Honours in addition to OHL Player of the Year and OHL Defenceman of the Year recognition as he led the 67’s to a Mastercard Memorial Cup title. Other career highlights included winning a Stanley Cup title with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010 while also winning the Lady Byng Trophy as the NHL’s Most Sportsmanlike Player in 2012.
After a 210-point (38-172–210) OHL career with the 67’s, the Strathroy, Ont. native went on to produce 504 (87-417–504) in the National Hockey League before announcing his retirement following the 2016-17 season.
