Thursday Recap: Winning streak at five

Two of the league’s hottest teams continued in their winning ways on Thursday.

The Erie Otters and Windsor Spitfires both extended their current winning streaks to five on a busy night with five games on the schedule.

The Otters are Canada’s top ranked team, boasting a record of 18-2-1-0 while the Spitfires currently lead the West Division at 15-4-3-0 and are the country’s ninth ranked club.

ERIE 4 NIAGARA 3 OT – Rookie Vanya Lodnia scored with 1:33 remaining in overtime as the Erie Otters edged Niagara 4-3. Dylan Strome, Taylor Raddysh and Kyle Maksimovich each had a goal and an assist while goaltender Devin Williams made 31 saves. The Otters extend their current winning streak to five games despite being outshot 34-24. Jordan Maletta, Brendan Perlini and Mikkel Aagaard scored in the loss for the Dogs.

WINDSOR 3 GUELPH 2 – Arizona Coyotes prospect Christian Fischer scored twice while draft eligible centreman Logan Brown also found the scoresheet in a 3-2 Spitfires win over the Guelph Storm. The Spits extend their current winning streak to five behind 23 saves from Garret Hughson. Garrett McFadden and James McEwan had goals for the Storm while Bradley Van Schubert made 27 saves.

LONDON 5 OSHAWA 2 – Mitch Marner and Christian Dvorak had a goal and two assists each as the London Knights improved to 14-3-1-1 in a 5-2 win over Oshawa. J.J. Piccinich, Aaron Berisha and Owen MacDonald also scored for the green and gold. Oshawa goaltender Jeremy Brodeur made several big saves among his 23 on the night in the losing cause. The Generals have now lost five straight.

BARRIE 4 SUDBURY 1 – Kevin Labanc scored twice while Julius Nattinen had a goal and an assist as the Barrie Colts improved to 13-7-0-0 in a 4-1 win over the Sudbury Wolves. Blueliner Josh Carrick scored his first goal of the season for the Colts while New Jersey Devils prospect Mackenzie Blackwood made 30 saves to record the win. Chad Heffernan provided the lone Sudbury goal.

KINGSTON 4 NORTH BAY 3 – In a rare occurance, an empty netter turned out to be the winning goal on Thursday in North Bay as the Battalion nearly came back to surprise the Kingston Frontenacs. Spencer Watson hit the open cage with 1:32 left in the third period before David Sherman and Mike Amadio pulled the Troops back to within a goal. The Fronts would hang on for a 4-3 victory as Juho Lammikko earned first star honours with his eighth goal of the season. The Frontenacs lead the East Division with a record of 13-6-1-1.
