Offence vs. defence headlines Round 2 as the Brantford Bulldogs take on the North Bay Battalion in a compelling OHL playoff showdown.

(1) Brantford Bulldogs (48-10-8-2) vs. (5) North Bay Battalion (38-26-3-1)

In a rematch from last year's first round, the reigning Hamilton Spectator Trophy winners, the Brantford Bulldogs, are slated to take on the North Bay Battalion in what promises to be a compelling second-round showdown. The two clubs met twice in March, with each team taking one game – both decided by a single goal – suggesting this series could be every bit as tight.

Brantford comes in riding high after sweeping the eighth-seeded Sudbury Wolves, powered by the offensive firepower that made them the top team in the regular season. 2026 NHL Draft prospect Caleb Malholtra has been spectacular, highlighted by a five-point night in Game 3, and is currently leading the club in playoff scoring. Meanwhile, Marek Vanacker has carried his league-leading goal-scoring form into the postseason, potting six so far.

North Bay, on the other hand, had to earn it the hard way. The Battalion fought through a gruelling six-game series against the Peterborough Petes, with five of those games decided by a single goal. But it was Parker Vaughan who ultimately ended it, scoring twice in double overtime of Game 6, including the series winner. The undisputed star of the series, however, was goaltender Jack Lisson, who was nothing short of brilliant, appearing in all six games and finishing with a 1.71 goals-against average, a .950 save percentage, and two shutouts.

That contrast in styles makes this matchup especially intriguing. The Bulldogs come in as an offensive powerhouse, while the Battalion have shown they can defend tightly, stay composed in pressure moments, and find ways to win close games. On paper, this is Brantford’s series to lose. But North Bay arrives battle-tested and full of confidence, and with Lisson providing a steady presence in goal, they may just have the pieces to make this a much closer series than the seeding might suggest.

The OHL has announced finalists for the Emms Family Award, presented annually to the Rookie of the Year.

TORONTO - The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) today announced finalists for the Emms Family Award, presented annually to the OHL Rookie of the Year as voted by the League's General Managers.

Team nominees were required to receive 20% of the vote from General Managers within their own conference to advance to the final ballot as award finalists.

This year's Emms Family Award finalists include:

Caleb Malhotra (C, Brantford Bulldogs) - 67 GP, 29 G, 55 A, 84 PTS.
Everyone expected contributions from Caleb Malhotra in his first OHL season, but did we think he'd end up being this dominant as a 17-year-old? The 6-foot-2 pivot emerged as one of the best centremen in the OHL, diving right in with points in 10 of his first 11 games, including a five-point effort on Sept. 27th vs. Sudbury. When all was said and done, Malhotra had set a new single season mark for most points by a Bulldogs rookie while posting impressive peripherals like a plus-33 rating, eight game-winning goals and 30 points on the power play. The top NHL Draft eligible demonstrated that he could thrive playing between older, skilled players on a deep Bulldogs roster. Malhotra was a finalist in the best stickhandler category on the OHL Coaches Poll.

Nikita Klepov (RW, Saginaw Spirit) - 67 GP, 37 G, 60 A, 97 PTS.
Perhaps lesser known in Canadian circles than Malhotra entering the season, Nikita Klepov burst onto the scene in Saginaw and immediately provided the Spirit with front line scoring, potting three points in his OHL debut on Sept. 19th at Sault Ste. Marie before netting five points of his own on Oct. 4th at Owen Sound. Klepov would go on to lead the entire OHL in scoring, tying a Spirit rookie record held by Cole Perfetti with 37 goals. He finished the year with 38 points on the power play, and even scored three shorthanded goals. The NHL Draft eligible 6-foot, 180Ib. winger from Deerfield Beach, Florida, thrived alongside other Spirit forwards of Russian descent in Egor Barabanov and Dimian Zhilkin as Saginaw, despite finishing eighth in the Western Conference, managed to score 228 goals and owned the OHL's fifth-best power play. Klepov was voted as the Western Conference's most dangerous player in the goal area, as well as the best shootout shooter in the OHL Coaches Poll.

TORONTO - The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) today announced that Ben Wilmott of the Barrie Colts is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, leading the League with eight points (4-4--8) over three games to help the Colts advance to the second round of the playoffs.

Wilmott connected for three consecutive multi-point outings, starting the week with a goal and two assists in the Colts' 5-2 road win over the Niagara IceDogs in Game 3 on Tuesday. Wilmott scored twice and added a helper in Barrie's 9-6 victory to go up 3-1 in the series at the Meridian Centre on Thursday. He helped the Colts eliminate the IceDogs back on home ice Saturday night, recording a goal and an assist in a 5-0 win.

A 19-year-old from Long Valley, New Jersey, Wilmott enjoyed a productive first season in the OHL, recording 66 points (27-39--66) over 66 games between Barrie and London, posting a rating of plus-30. The 6-foot-1, 190Ib. centreman has 10 points (5-5--10) over five games in these playoffs. The London Knights signed Wilmott as an undrafted free agent last summer after he spent the 2024-25 season with the USHL's Sioux Falls Stampede and Chicago Steel. Wilmott is committed to Ohio State University (NCAA).

Saginaw, Mich. – The Saginaw Spirit and Rescue Ministries of Mid-Michigan partnered for their 14th Hockey for the Homeless Night earlier this season. Together, they raised a record $113, 090 in donations from fans, a broomball tournament, and specialty jersey auction.

“This is a testament to how God continues to bless Saginaw and how great things can happen when we all work together. This year’s results are truly miraculous,” said Spirit President, Managing Partner and Governor Craig Goslin. “We’re proud of our staff, players, and partners that contributed to the Henry the Hockey Dog season-long project to raise dollars for people in our community that desperately need our love and support. The Rescue Ministries are doing such important work in the Great Lakes Bay Region and we are honored to continue standing side-by-side with them for Hockey for the Homeless.”

The Spirit wore specialty black jerseys for their February 28th meeting with the Peterborough Petes, a 5-2 win in front of 4,877 fans. Their jerseys that night were designed with input from the players themselves and auctioned off immediately following the game. Saginaw’s jersey auction alone accounted for more than $14,000 raised in support of Hockey for the Homeless.

“We are so thankful for the entire Saginaw Spirit organization, as well as everyone who was part of this year’s Hockey for the Homeless effort,” said Rescue Ministries CEO Dan Streeter. “Our sponsors, supporters, and the entire community truly come together each year to make this night very rewarding for everyone. We are grateful to the Henry the Hockey Dog season-long project as we had eight companies step up with matching dollars, and that was a major assist in the $113,090!”

Hockey for the Homeless Night was one of several charitable nights by the Spirit and the Saginaw Spirit Charitable Foundation in the 2025-2026 season. Others included their annual Teddy Bear Toss, Food Drive, Shocks & Saves Game, and more.

Total funds raised through Hockey for the Homeless Nights over the past 14 seasons has now passed $780,000—roughly 26,000 nights of shelter through the Rescue Ministries’ various locations.

TORONTO - For the first time in OHL Cup history, an American-based team has come away as champions. Detroit HoneyBaked outlasted the Toronto Jr. Canadiens 3-1 to come out on top at the annual showcase of OHL Draft eligible talent, closing out the event with a perfect 7-0 record.

A big Saturday afternoon crowd took in the action at Mattamy Athletic Centre, formerly Maple Leaf Gardens in downtown Toronto as tournament MVP Austin Hall lit the lamp twice for HoneyBaked, scoring the deciding goal on a rebound four minutes into the third period.

It's the latest in a series of momentous victories for HoneyBaked, who emerged as Michigan state champions last month and also won the Whitby International Silver Stick tournament back in November.

"Words can't describe it," said Hall, who led the OHL Cup in scoring with 14 points. "First American team to do it - it's history.

"We've been a third period team all year long, coming back from behind and just pushing and having grit. Our saying is 'grittiness,' we just love to play hockey."

Reid Fallon opened the scoring with his first of the tournament 5:08 into the first period with assists from Max Mitchell and Max Lappan. HoneyBaked led 1-0 after a tight-checking first period.

The Jr. Canadiens drew even on a goal from Jackson Zinkie 1:29 into the second as he was the beneficiary of a hard net drive from blueliner Anthony Peragine who rushed down the wing.

Knotted at one to start the third, HoneyBaked came up with the decisive goal-ahead goal as Hall put-home a rebound off Ivan Belikov's initial point shot.

Hall cashed-in on the empty net for his seventh goal of the showcase with 21 seconds to go, sealing the win for HoneyBaked to make OHL Cup history.

HoneyBaked outshot the Jr. Canadiens 28-24 as goaltender Carter Nash turned in 23 saves to improve to 5-0 in the tournament.

"I'm so proud of the boys, they've worked hard for this and it's been one of our goals since the start of the season," said HoneyBaked Head Coach Matthew Romaniski.

"We were serious about coming and winning this. It was good to come up here and finish out the year the right way. The boys have been focused and dedicated. I think we did a pretty good job this week."

OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford was on-hand to present the OHL Cup to Detroit HoneyBaked captain Max Lappan.

The Toronto Jr. Canadiens come away as silver medalists with a tournament record of 6-1, appearing in the OHL Cup Championship Final for the third time in the last four years. Brayden Grima and Kash Kwajah finish tied for second in OHL Cup 13 points respectively.

Detroit HoneyBaked emerged victorious from a field of 25 teams, the most the OHL Cup has featured in its 23-year history. The event was once again hosted in partnership with the Greater Toronto Hockey League.

The Los Angeles Kings have signed London Knights defenceman Henry Brzustewicz to a three-year NHL entry-level contract.

Brzustewicz, 19, was selected by Los Angeles in the first round, 31st overall, of the 2025 NHL Draft.

The Washington, Mich., native recently completed his third season in the Ontario Hockey League with the London Knights, emerging as one of the league’s top offensive defencemen. He led the Knights with 54 points (19 goals, 35 assists) in 59 games during the 2025-26 regular season.

Brzustewicz’s breakout campaign also saw him lead all OHL defencemen in shots while ranking among the league leaders on the power play, finishing second in power-play goals and top 10 in points among blueliners.

Over three seasons in London, the 6-foot-2, 205-pound right-shot defenceman recorded 102 points (31 goals, 71 assists) in 178 career regular season games, developing into a key contributor on one of the OHL’s premier teams.

Brzustewicz played an important role in London’s championship success, helping the Knights capture back-to-back OHL titles in 2024 and 2025 before going on to win the Memorial Cup in 2025. He added 10 points in 38 career playoff games, contributing to multiple deep postseason runs.

Known for his ability to generate offence from the back end, Brzustewicz combined strong puck movement with a heavy shot and power-play presence throughout his time in the OHL. His progression into a top-pairing defenceman in London played a key role in his rise to becoming a first-round NHL Draft selection.

Brzustewicz will now continue his development within the Kings organization following a three-year OHL career that saw him grow into one of the league’s most productive defencemen.
