86 OHL alumni to compete in the NHL’s 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs

A total of 86 Ontario Hockey League alumni are set to compete in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, part of a CHL-leading presence that continues to shape the NHL’s biggest stage. In all, 190 graduates of the Canadian Hockey League will take part in the postseason, accounting for more than 45 percent of the 417 players competing, the highest total of any development league in the world. The OHL’s 86 representatives lead the way among CHL member leagues, followed by 65 from the WHL and 40 from the QMJHL. Every NHL club in the playoffs features at least eight CHL alumni, with the Dallas Stars, Edmonton Oilers, Vegas Golden Knights, and Tampa Bay Lightning each rostering 15. At the club level, the London Knights top all CHL teams with 11 alumni competing in the playoffs, while the Erie Otters are close behind with eight. Barrie, Owen Sound, and Windsor each have seven, highlighting the OHL’s footprint across contending NHL rosters. That influence continues to show in championship success. Since 2014, 156 of the 294 Stanley Cup champions, more than half, have come through the CHL, including 10 members of last year’s champion Florida Panthers. Across the 2025-26 regular season, 478 CHL alumni appeared in at least one NHL game, representing 46.1 percent of all players league-wide, further underscoring the league’s role as the primary path to the NHL. 10 CHL alumni will serve as captains for their respective NHL clubs in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, including Minnesota Wild defenceman Jared Spurgeon (Spokane Chiefs / WHL), Colorado Avalanche forward Gabriel Landeskog (Kitchener Rangers / OHL), and Philadelphia Flyers forward Sean Couturier (Drummondville Voltigeurs / QMJHL).
Over the last 30 years, 12 of the 18 captains to have lifted the Stanley Cup played in the CHL, including CHL Top 50 selections Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins / Rimouski Océanic / QMJHL), Scott Niedermayer (Anaheim Ducks / Kamloops Blazers / WHL), and Scott Stevens (New Jersey Devils / Kitchener Rangers / OHL).
Since the CHL’s inception in 1975-76, 21 of the 28 captains to have hoisted the Stanley Cup have been developed in the WHL, OHL/OHA, or QMJHL.
Of the 16 head coaches leading teams into this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs, 10 have either coached and/or played in the CHL, including Travis Green (Ottawa Senators), Joel Quenneville (Anaheim Ducks), and André Tourigny (Utah Mammoth)
Among the players competing in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs are seven CHL alumni who have been named to the CHL’s Top 50 Players list from the league’s first 50 years (since 1975-76): Carolina Hurricanes forward Taylor Hall (Windsor Spitfires / OHL), Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon (Halifax Mooseheads / QMJHL), Edmonton Oilers forwards Connor McDavid (Erie Otters / OHL) and Leon Draisaitl (Prince Albert Raiders & Kelowna Rockets / WHL), Los Angeles Kings defenceman Drew Doughty (Guelph Storm / OHL), Tampa Bay Lightning forward Corey Perry (London Knights / OHL), and Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby (Rimouski Océanic / QMJHL).

2025-26 Regular Season Highlights

With 138 points (48G-90A) in 82 games, McDavid (Erie Otters / OHL) extended the streak of CHL alumni winning the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL’s leading scorer to 13 consecutive seasons, dating back to 2013-14. McDavid’s six career Art Ross Trophies are tied for the second most in NHL history, behind only Soo Greyhounds (OHL) grad Wayne Gretzky.
With an NHL-best 53 goals in 2025-26, MacKinnon (Halifax Mooseheads / QMJHL) became the third different CHL alumnus in the last four years to win the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy. He also became just the third player in Avalanche franchise history to record multiple 50-goal seasons, joining fellow CHL alumni Michel Goulet (Québec Remparts / QMJHL) and Joe Sakic (Swift Current Broncos / WHL).
With the Colorado Avalanche allowing an NHL-low 203 goals in 2025-26, goaltenders Scott Wedgewood (Plymouth Whalers / OHL) and Mackenzie Blackwood (Barrie Colts / OHL) captured the William M. Jennings Trophy. They are the first CHL-developed goaltending tandem to win the award since Marc-André Fleury (QMJHL) and Robin Lehner (OHL) in 2020-21.
Wedgewood (Plymouth Whalers / OHL) finished the season atop the NHL in both goals-against average (2.02) and save percentage (.921), leading the league by a sizable margin in each category.
New York Islanders defenceman Matthew Schaefer (Erie Otters / OHL) set the NHL benchmark for most points by an 18-year-old defenseman (59), tied the single-season NHL record for most goals (23) by a rookie defenseman and became the first defenseman in more than 90 years – and fourth in NHL history – to lead all NHL rookies in goals (tied or outright).
Schaefer shared the NHL rookie lead in goals with fellow OHL alumnus Beckett Sennecke of the Anaheim Ducks (Oshawa Generals / OHL), as each scored 23 times.
Crosby (Rimouski Océanic / QMJHL) extended his NHL record by averaging a point-per-game or better for the 21st time in his 21-season career, ahead of second-place and OHL alumnus Wayne Gretzky (19).
Colorado Avalanche defenceman Brent Burns (Brampton Battalion / OHL) became just the second player in NHL history to play 1,000 consecutive games.
Detroit Red Wings forward Patrick Kane (London Knights / OHL) reached 500 goals and 1,400 points during the same campaign in which he became the all-time leader for points by a U.S.-born player.
Nick Suzuki (Owen Sound Attack & Guelph Storm / OHL) became the first Montreal Canadiens player to record a 100-point season since 1985-86, while Mark Scheifele (Barrie Colts / OHL) joined WHL alumnus Marian Hossa (Portland Winterhawks) as the only players in Atlanta Thrashers/Winnipeg Jets franchise history to reach the 100-point mark.
Of the 32 skaters who led their team in scoring during the 2025-26 regular season, 14 of them are CHL alumni, including Chicago Blackhawks forward Connor Bedard (Regina Pats / WHL), Detroit Red Wings forward Alex DeBrincat (Erie Otters / OHL), and Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon (Halifax Mooseheads / QMJHL).
Seven of the NHL’s top 10 scorers in 2025-26 are CHL graduates, including the league’s top three point-getters: McDavid, Nikita Kucherov (Québec Remparts & Rouyn-Noranda Huskies / QMJHL), and MacKinnon. The other CHL alumni in the top 10 are Scheifele, Suzuki, Draisaitl, and Jason Robertson (Kingston Frontenacs / OHL).

Ryder Cali added to Hockey Canada preliminary U18 roster

Hockey Canada has added North Bay Battalion forward Ryder Cali to its preliminary roster for the 2026 IIHF U18 Men’s World Championship, bringing the total to nine OHL players named to the roster. The tournament is scheduled from April 22 to May 2 in Bratislava and Trenčín, Slovakia.

Cali just wrapped up his first full season with North Bay, recording 36 points (16-20–36) across 47 games after appearing in five contests late in the 2024-25 campaign. Here’s a look at some of the top performances from former OHL players at hockey’s highest level: Scoring Leaders Forward Scoring Leader – Connor McDavid (Erie Otters/Edmonton Oilers) McDavid once again set the standard offensively, leading the NHL with 138 points while also pacing the league with 90 assists. The Oilers captain extended his streak of 100-point seasons to six, further cementing his place among the game’s elite. The 100-Point Club Only eight players reached the 100-point plateau in the NHL this season, and three of them are OHL graduates. Joining McDavid are Mark Scheifele (Barrie Colts) at 103 points and Nick Suzuki (Owen Sound Attack/Guelph Storm) at 101. That means OHL alumni made up nearly 40 percent of the league's most exclusive scoring club. Rookie Standouts Matthew Schaefer (Erie Otters/New York Islanders) The first-overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft delivered one of the most remarkable rookie seasons ever by a defenceman. Schaefer's 23 goals tied Hall of Famer Brian Leetch for the NHL record for goals by a rookie defenceman, a mark that had stood since 1988-89. Along the way, he broke Phil Housley's 43-year record for most points by an 18-year-old defenceman (previously 57 in 1982-83) and surpassed Denis Potvin's Islanders franchise record for goals by a rookie defenceman. At 18 years, 195 days, Schaefer became the youngest defenceman in NHL history to reach 50 career points. Despite missing the latter half of the 2024-25 season due to injury, Schaefer was a workhorse from the opening puck drop, leading all first-year defencemen in assists (36), points (59), power-play points (18), shots on goal (217), and average ice time (24:41). He also finished first among all rookies in penalties drawn. Schaefer was named NHL Rookie of the Month in both October and December and enters the awards race as the Calder Trophy front-runner. Beckett Sennecke (Oshawa Generals/Anaheim Ducks) The third-overall pick from the 2024 NHL Draft made an immediate impact in Anaheim, scoring in his NHL debut on October 9 and never looking back. He recorded his first career hat trick on January 25 with the overtime winner in a 4-3 victory over Calgary, and he leaves his debut regular season as a cornerstone piece of Anaheim's young core. Mogull, 17, is a 6-foot-1, 181-pound forward from Florida, USA. Skating with Cushing Academy (USHS-Prep) this season, he registered 15 goals and 14 assists for 29 points in 27 games, highlighting his offensive instincts and consistent production.

2026 OHL Awards – 67’s’ Fetterolf named OHL Goaltender of the Year

TORONTO - The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) today announced that first-year Ottawa 67's netminder Ryder Fetterolf is this year's recipient of the Jim Rutherford Trophy, presented annually to the OHL Goaltender of the Year as voted by the League's General Managers. Signed as an undrafted free agent by the 67's last summer, Fetterolf quickly became a force in the Ottawa crease, going 29-9-2-1, setting a new franchise record with a 2.07 goals-against average along with a league-best .923 save percentage. His six shutouts set a new OHL record, the most by a rookie goaltender in a single season. “It’s a huge honour,” said Fetterolf. “I owe a lot to our coaching staff, especially my goalie coach, Andrew Mercer. Everyone in this organization has supported me and pushed me every step of the way. There’s been a lot of hard work behind the scenes to get here, and I’m really grateful to everyone who believed in and supported me this season.” Fetterolf earned OHL Rookie of the Month recognition in October, and later claimed top rookie and goaltender honours for the month of March. He becomes the first American goaltender to earn the Jim Rutherford Trophy since Alex Nedeljkovic of the Plymouth Whalers in 2013-14. It also marks the first time a rookie goaltender in his first two years of eligibility has won OHL Goaltender of the Year honours. “We’re very proud of Ryder and what this honour represents,” said 67’s General Manager Jan Egert. “Ryder’s performance gives the team in front of him confidence, which has been an important part of our success. We’re proud of the growth he’s shown this season, given the investments he and Goaltending Coach Andrew Mercer made throughout the year.” An 18-year-old from Sewickley, Pennsylvania, Fetterolf came to the OHL out of Gilmour Academy, based in Gates Mills, Ohio. The 6-foot, 186Ib. puckstopper is the OHL's top draft eligible netminder according to NHL Central Scouting's final rankings, which list him as the 11th-ranked North American netminder. Fetterolf is just the second 67's goaltender to earn the award since it was first introduced in 1987-88, following Craig Hillier 30 years ago in 1995-96. Recent winners have included Jackson Parsons of the Kitchener Rangers (2024-25), Jacob Oster of the Oshawa Generals (2023-24) and Domenic DiVincentiis of the North Bay Battalion (2022-23). Announced in August 2019, the Jim Rutherford Trophy is presented by the League in honour of former OHL goaltender, General Manager, Chairman of the Board and two-time Executive of the Year Jim Rutherford. The current President of Hockey Operations of the Vancouver Canucks, Rutherford played 13 seasons as an NHL netminder and was the architect behind Stanley Cup championships for the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006 and Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in November 2019. Fetterolf was the front-runner in this year’s award voting, followed by a group of finalists that consists of Flint's Mason Vaccari, Peterborough's Easton Rye, Sault Ste. Marie's Carter George and Windsor's Joey Costanzo. Fetterolf will be formally recognized as the OHL Goaltender of the Year at the 2026 OHL Awards ceremony to be held at The Hockey Hall of Fame in June. 2026 U14 OHL Cup Underway in Kingston

Sixteen teams are chasing Ontario U14 supremacy in Kingston as the 2026 U14 OHL Cup is underway, with this year marking the fifth annual showcase. The event takes place at Kingston's INVISTA Centre, with four divisions each consisting of four teams battling it out into the quarterfinal and semi-final stage before Sunday afternoon's Championship Final at 4:00pm. "The OHL is proud to continue partnering with the OMHA to present this exciting opportunity, and we look forward to an outstanding weekend of hockey," said OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford." Occurring annually since 2003, the OHL Cup Showcase for U16 AAA players has included familiar names such as Connor McDavid and other rising stars like Wyatt Johnston, Matthew Schaefer and Michael Misa, in addition to countless players that have played in the OHL and gone on to pursue various careers with the use of their OHL Scholarship." IceDogs Announce Mutual Parting of Ways with General Manager Frank Evola

TORONTO – A total of 76 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) players have been included in NHL Central Scouting’s Final Draft Rankings for the 2026 NHL Draft, underscoring the league’s depth heading into June.

CANADIAN HOCKEY LEAGUE BOASTS 75.5 PER CENT OF RANKS TO LEAD ALL NORTH AMERICAN DEVELOPMENT LEAGUES

The list features 65 skaters and 11 goaltenders from across the OHL, spanning all 20 member clubs. In total, 197 players developed across the Canadian Hockey League's (CHL) three member leagues (OHL, WHL, and QMJHL) were included in the final rankings. The Western Hockey League (WHL) leads the way with 78 current players (69 skaters, 9 goaltenders), while the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) features 41 (35 skaters, 6 goaltenders). Of the 224 North American skaters ranked, 65 hail from the OHL, accounting for approximately 29% of the list. Defenceman Chase Reid of the Soo Greyhounds leads the way among OHL prospects, ranked second overall on the North American Skater list. He is one of four OHL players inside the top 10, joined by Caleb Malhotra of the Brantford Bulldogs (6), Nikita Klepov (8), and Ethan Belchetz of the Windsor Spitfires (9). “It was difficult to come up with this order, and there is strong consensus that all four of these defencemen are going to be franchise builders,” said Dan Marr, Vice President and Director of NHL Central Scouting, on the latest edition of the NHL Draft Class podcast. “[Chase] Reid was the new kid on the block, but at every level and in every situation he was put in, he didn’t just perform — he excelled with the puck. He also has a very strong defensive game, which I don’t think he gets enough credit for.” Malhotra, who arrived in the OHL after a season in the BCHL, quickly established himself as one of the league’s most complete forwards. The 17-year-old recorded 84 points (29-55–84) in 67 games, setting a new single-season mark for most points by a Brantford Bulldogs rookie. He also posted a plus-33 rating, added eight game-winning goals, and produced 30 points on the power play, proving he could thrive alongside older, skilled players on a deep roster. “Caleb had a more well-rounded game for us. Going into the season, he was a bit more unknown after coming from the BCHL, but right from the first game, we knew we had to move him to an A-rated prospect,” Marr said. “He has a complete game — he plays with composure and compete, and makes plays where there is no play. He’s very well respected within his team and around the league.” Klepov’s offensive instincts have also stood out among this year’s class, as he emerged as one of the most dangerous scorers in the OHL. The Saginaw Spirit forward led the league with 97 points (37-60–97) in 67 games, capturing the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy as the OHL’s top point producer while also being named the recipient of the Emms Family Award as OHL Rookie of the Year. In doing so, Klepov became the first player since Patrick Kane in 2007 to win both honours in the same season. He also tied a Saginaw franchise rookie record with 37 goals, adding 38 power-play points and three shorthanded markers to showcase his all-situations impact. “He reminds me of Ilya Kovalchuk — always open, always dangerous with the one-timer,” Marr said. “He’s that type of scorer, but he’s also a hard-working two-way player who understands the game very well. When he’s ready, he’s going to hit the NHL in a big way.” Belchetz, meanwhile, has taken notable strides in rounding out his game, emerging as a physically imposing presence with a growing offensive toolkit. He remained at No. 9 despite being sidelined since late February after sustaining a season-ending injury. “Ethan filled the holes in his game this past season, and any doubt people may have had, he erased,” Marr added. “He’s a power forward with good hands, strong puck skills, and high hockey sense. Sometimes it takes bigger players longer to reach their peak, but he’s already performing at a high level — and he hasn’t even reached that peak yet. He’s a huge physical presence, but also one of the more humble players you’ll meet.” In total, 10 OHL players are ranked among the top 32 North American skaters, signalling strong first-round potential across the league. By position, the OHL's contribution to the list includes 14 centres, 17 left-wingers, 11 right-wingers, and 23 defencemen, along with 11 goaltenders. All 20 OHL member teams are represented in the final rankings, led by the London Knights with seven players included – the highest total in the OHL. CHL-wide, that mark is matched by the WHL's Prince Albert Raiders, while the Medicine Hat Tigers lead all CHL clubs with nine players ranked. The 2026 NHL Draft will be held June 26–27 at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York, marking the fourth time the Buffalo Sabres have hosted the event. The NHL will once again use a decentralized format, with prospects and their families attending in person while team executives make selections remotely from their home markets. Buffalo has also hosted the NHL’s annual Scouting Combine since 2015 and will welcome the league’s top draft-eligible prospects again this spring.
