NHL Debut: Sandis Vilmanis (January 10, 2026)
Sandis Vilmanis made his NHL debut on Saturday, January 10, skating in his first career game with the Florida Panthers.
Vilmanis, 21, earned the call-up after a strong start to the season with the Charlotte Checkers, where he was tied for the team lead in scoring with 19 points (eight goals, 11 assists) through 31 games. The Riga, Latvia native was in his second season with Charlotte and had recorded 46 points (17 goals, 29 assists) in 92 career AHL games. He also added seven points (three goals, four assists) in 11 Calder Cup Playoff games last spring.
The NHL debut capped off a memorable stretch for Vilmanis, who was named to Team Latvia’s roster for the Olympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina 2026 on January 6. The selection marked the first time an active Checkers player had been named to the Winter Olympics.
“Super excited. A lot of mixed emotions to be honest,” said Vilmanis earlier this week. “The past two weeks have been really up-and-down for me, so with the Olympics and this, it has been crazy. Super excited.”
Selected by Florida in the fifth round (157th overall) of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, Vilmanis played three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League after being chosen 14th overall by the Sarnia Sting in the 2022 CHL Import Draft. He later suited up for the North Bay Battalion, combining for 122 OHL games and 112 points (58 goals, 54 assists).
Vilmanis becomes the latest OHL graduate to reach the NHL this season, adding another milestone to a year that already included international recognition and a long-awaited first NHL appearance.
