Rangers sign forward Braden Reilly

Kitchener, Ont. — The Kitchener Rangers are proud to announce that 2026 first-round pick Braden Reilly has signed an Ontario Hockey League Scholarship and Development Agreement. Reilly was selected by the Rangers in the first round, 19th overall, in the 2026 OHL Priority Selection. A forward from Milton, Ontario, Reilly spent last season with the Toronto Marlboros U16 AAA program, where he served as an assistant captain and established himself as one of the top players in his age group. “We were very excited to select Braden in the first round,” said Kitchener Rangers General Manager Mike McKenzie. “He is a very talented player that can make plays and also use his shot and skill to put the puck in the net. We feel he has all the tools to be a top player in the age group and look forward to seeing him in a Ranger uniform.” Reilly, 16, born on May 12, 2010, is listed at five-foot-eleven and 157 pounds. During the 2025-26 season, he recorded 15 goals and 18 assists for 33 points in 30 games with the Toronto Marlboros U16 AAA, while adding two goals and two assists for four points in four OHL Cup games. “Signing with Kitchener means so much to me,” said Reilly. “I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such a great organization and I can’t wait to get started.” Growing up attending Kitchener Rangers games at The Aud, Reilly now joins the organization he watched as a young fan. Generals sign 2026 first-overall selection, Kane Cloutier

Oshawa, ON - The Oshawa Generals have signed the first overall pick from the 2026 OHL Priority Selection Draft, Kane Cloutier, to an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement. Cloutier spent last season with the Vaughan Kings U16 AAA team, where he collected 58 points in 33 games, including 32 goals on route to helping his team win the GTHL. In the OHL Cup Kane played four games, scoring six goals while adding five assists for 11 points. “It’s great to get Kane officially signed to be a General,” said GM Roger Hunt. “Kane embraces and wants all the same things that we do. He wants to get into the playoffs and win a championship. That’s how he is wired, and that is how he is driven.” As the Gens look to bounce back, it is this attitude that is going to help drive the change, not only on the ice but in the locker room as well. GensNation has another player to watch out for as the season progresses; Kane is a skilled, dynamic forward that will add a lot to the Generals. “I know that our fans are excited to see Kane in a Gens uniform and get his Oshawa Generals career underway,” added Hunt.

Playing at the highest level of Czech junior hockey, Nemec registered 34 points (23-11–34) in 33 games and earned an opportunity with Bílí Tygři Liberec in the Extraliga, making his professional debut at just 16. He returned to the U17 level for the playoffs, adding 16 points (9-7–16) in nine games. The Södertälje, Sweden, native becomes the Bulldogs’ first-ever Swedish player and first import goaltender. Salen Forsberg spent the 2025-26 season competing as an underager with Södertälje SK U18, posting a .898 save percentage across 18 appearances. He also earned a call-up to the U20 level as a 16-year-old, recording a .939 save percentage in his lone appearance. Most recently, he represented Sweden at the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, appearing in all four games. “Vilmer is an incredibly exciting young goaltender who we believe is going to make a big impact in the OHL. OHL to play central role in Ontario Men’s Junior Hockey Development pilot approved for 2026-27 season

TORONTO – The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) will play a central role in an Ontario Men’s Junior Hockey Development pilot project approved by Hockey Canada’s board of directors for the 2026-27 season, a province-wide initiative designed to bring greater consistency to men’s junior hockey in Ontario while creating additional development opportunities for players and goaltenders. Built in collaboration with Hockey Canada, the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF), Hockey Eastern Ontario (HEO), Hockey Northwestern Ontario (HNO) and men’s junior leagues from across the province, the pilot focuses on three priority areas:

Consistent playing rules
Player and goaltender development
Emergency goaltender exemption

“In partnership with the HEO, HNO and the OHF, Hockey Canada is looking forward to strengthening men’s junior hockey in Ontario with this innovative pilot that is designed to improve the player experience,” said Darren Cossar, senior vice-president of member engagement for Hockey Canada. “With the success of the Western Canadian Development Model and Maritime Junior Hockey League Aligned Rules pilots, we are excited to work with our Members and the Ontario men’s junior hockey leagues to implement these changes and track their effectiveness throughout the season.” “This pilot is the product of real collaboration — Hockey Canada, the OHF, HEO, HNO and junior leagues right across Ontario sitting down together and asking what is best for the player,” said Darrell Woodley, director of hockey development for the Ontario Hockey League. “When our rules line up and our pathways connect, a young player in Thunder Bay, Ottawa or Windsor moves through the game with far less friction. That is what this is about: streamlining development in this province so we continue to produce great Canadian players and goaltenders, and so the next group has every opportunity to reach their potential.” Consistent Playing Rules To create greater consistency across Ontario men’s junior hockey, six leagues will adopt the Ontario Hockey League Rule Book for the 2026-27 season, with exceptions for specific playing rules agreed upon by Hockey Canada and the three Ontario Members:

Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League (EOJHL)
Greater Ontario Hockey League (GOHL)
Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL)
Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL)
Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL)

Hockey Canada’s Maltreatment and Fighting rules will continue to apply across all six leagues. The CCHL, NOJHL, OJHL and SIJHL will follow International Ice Hockey Federation Rule 202 for facial protection, which provides players 18 years of age or older as of Dec. 31 of the current season the option to wear half-face protection, while players under the age of 18 must continue to wear full-face protection. Facial protection requirements in the OHL are unchanged under the pilot. Player and Goaltender Development To provide additional development opportunities for 16-year-old players while maintaining the overall number of 16-year-olds participating in Ontario men’s junior hockey, the pilot includes four player and goaltender development initiatives:

Continuing from a separate pilot last season, one 16-year-old player selected in the OHL Priority Selection may register outside their home Ontario Member, with a maximum of one such player per OHL team. Junior A and Junior B teams may also register one 17-year-old player from another Ontario Member.
New this season, each OHL team may designate one 16-year-old player selected in the 2026 OHL Priority Selection and assigned to a Junior A or Junior B team for expanded affiliation of up to 34 games. This player may be registered in addition to the two 16-year-olds normally permitted on a roster, with the Junior A or Junior B team operating with a reduced maximum roster size to carry the additional player.
The pilot also provides expanded affiliation opportunities for 17-year-olds reassigned from Junior A or Junior B to U18 AAA, allowing them to affiliate back for up to 50 per cent of the junior team’s regular-season games.
Participating junior teams may register one additional 16-year-old goaltender beyond the existing two-player limit for 16-year-olds, provided the goaltender participates in at least 40 per cent of the team’s regular-season games.

Emergency Goaltender Exemption To support teams experiencing exceptional goaltender shortages, particularly in Northern Ontario, an emergency goaltender exemption will permit the temporary registration of a replacement goaltender when a team’s regular goaltender is unable to play due to injury or illness, subject to league approval and appropriate medical documentation. Data from the Ontario Men’s Junior Hockey Development pilot will be reviewed throughout the 2026-27 season to assess its impact and determine whether any elements should be considered for future seasons. Otters sign 2026 second overall pick Colin Kennedy

Erie, Pennsylvania - General Manager Dave Brown and Director of Hockey Operations Scott Grieve announced today that the second overall pick in the 2026 OHL Priority Selection Colin Kennedy has signed an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement.

In 20 games with Little Caesars a season ago, Kennedy was outstanding, recording 36 points (24G+12A), averaging nearly two points per game, adding five more points in his league playoffs (2G+3A) and another seven (5G+2A) at the OHL Cup.

The 5'9, 168 lbs native of Sault Ste. Marie, ON is noted as one of the fastest skaters in the draft class and is an elite shooter who can score from almost anywhere.

Kennedy comes from a rich hockey family as he is the grandson of former Soo Greyhound and NHLer Craig Hartsburg as well as the son of former OHLer Craig Kennedy and perhaps most familiarly to Otters fans, the nephew of Erie Skills Coach Chris Hartsburg.

Kennedy spoke with excitement about joining the Otters organization and what he will bring to the club on a nightly basis.

"I'm really excited to be part of such a great organization," Kennedy said. "I'll do whatever I can to help the team win, make the playoffs and earn the trust of my coaches and teammates."

Grieve also spoke about the addition of Kennedy to the Otters lineup and what the club is expecting from the 16-year-old.

"The Otters are ecstatic to officially welcome Colin and the Kennedy family to Erie, Grieve said. "Colin plays the way we want to play, and we look forward to working with him on his development both on and off the ice."

Kennedy becomes the first member of the Otters' 2026 draft class to sign with the organization.

OHL extends support to Matthew Mayich and family

The Ontario Hockey League is sending thoughts, prayers and support to former Ottawa 67's defenceman Matthew Mayich and his family. It was reported on Tuesday that Matthew is in hospital following an off-ice training incident that occurred while preparing for the 2026-27 season last Thursday in Arizona. "Our thoughts are with Matthew, his parents John and Christina and the entire Mayich family," said OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford. "Matthew spent four seasons in our league and earned the respect of everyone he played with and against. The entire Ontario Hockey League is thinking of him and pulling for him, and we are keeping his family close in our thoughts."

Colts acquire first-round pick McNally as Storm add six draft picks

The Barrie Colts have acquired the rights to defenceman Declan McNally from the Guelph Storm in exchange for six future OHL Priority Selection picks.

Guelph receives Sarnia's second-round pick in 2028, Barrie's second-round pick in 2030, Brantford's third-round pick in 2028, Barrie's third-round pick in 2030, Barrie's fourth-round pick in 2029 and Sault Ste. Marie's fifth-round pick in 2027.

As part of the completion of the transaction, the Storm will also receive a compensatory first-round selection, eighth overall, in the 2027 OHL Priority Selection.

McNally was selected seventh overall by Guelph in the 2026 OHL Priority Selection following a strong season with the Don Mills Flyers U16 AAA program. The 6-foot-5, 184-pound defenceman from LaSalle, ON recorded seven goals, 26 assists and 33 points in 59 games before adding four points in five games at the 2026 OHL Cup.

The 16-year-old was also among 31 OHL prospects invited to Canada's national under-17 development camp this summer.

McNally's move to Barrie gives the Colts a pair of first-round defencemen from the 2026 OHL Priority Selection. Barrie selected hometown product Lucas Matheson 17th overall after the 6-foot defenceman captained the Barrie Colts U16 AAA program and recorded 18 goals, 22 assists and 40 points in 34 regular-season games.

McNally and Matheson now give the Colts two highly regarded 2009-born defencemen as the organization continues to assemble its young core for the future.

For Guelph, the transaction adds six future selections to the club's draft inventory as the Storm prepare to host the 2027 Memorial Cup. The additional compensatory first-round selection will give Guelph another early pick in next year's draft.

The Storm announced earlier this week that McNally would not be reporting to training camp after his representatives had previously expressed concerns regarding available opportunity on a veteran Guelph blueline.

"It's our responsibility to take the best available player at the 7th overall pick on draft day," Storm General Manager George Burnett said Monday. "Declan is a talented young hockey player who is ready and capable of playing in the Ontario Hockey League."

Wednesday's trade brings that process to a conclusion, with McNally joining the Colts and the Storm adding a collection of future draft assets as they enter their Memorial Cup host season.

Rangers sign defenceman Dmitri Toporowski

KITCHENER, ON – The Kitchener Rangers have announced that the club has signed defenceman Dmitri Toporowski to an Ontario Hockey League Scholarship and Development Agreement. Toporowski, a 2006-born defenceman from Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, is listed at 6-foot-1 and 187 pounds and shoots right. The 20-year-old joins the Rangers after spending the 2025-26 season with the Quad City Storm of the SPHL, where he recorded eight goals and nine assists for 17 points in 45 games, along with 102 penalty minutes. He also spent time with the Rochester Jr. Americans (three games) in the NAHL and the Tulsa Oilers (three games) in the ECHL. “Dmitri will provide some stability and experience to our defence group,” said Kitchener Rangers General Manager, Mike McKenzie. “He has had a unique path the last couple years and we think he can help provide some leadership and a solid two-way play to our group. We look forward to welcoming him to Kitchener.” Prior to his time in Quad City, Toporowski appeared in the WHL with the Red Deer Rebels during the 2024-25 season, following stops with the La Ronge Ice Wolves and Melfort Mustangs of the SJHL. Dmitri was drafted in the first round, 21st overall, by the Prince Albert Raiders in the 2021 WHL US Prospect Draft and was also drafted in 2025 by the Rochester Jr. Americans in the sixth round, 199th overall in the NAHL Entry Draft. Dmitri is now the lone overage skater on the Kitchener Rangers roster for the 2026-27 season. “It’s an incredible opportunity to join a team that just won the Memorial Cup,” said Dmitri Toroprowski. “There’s obviously a winning standard in Kitchener, and I’m excited to be part of that. As a 20-year-old, I know I have a responsibility to lead by example, bring energy and experience every day, and help this group continue to compete for championships. Three Former OHL Players Advance to NHL Officiating System

The Ontario Hockey League is pleased to congratulate officials Nick Isaacson, Hayden Verbeek and Chris Martenet, who have been hired by the National Hockey League on minor-league officiating contracts for the 2026-27 season. All three arrive in the NHL officiating system after previously playing in the Ontario Hockey League before returning to the league as officials. Isaacson and Martenet were both selected to participate in the 2025 CHL/NHL Officials' Development Camp in St-Hyacinthe, Que. last November, where they worked directly with NHL officiating supervisors through classroom meetings, video review and game assignments. Less than a year later, both have earned the opportunity to advance into the professional officiating ranks. "To have three former OHL players earn NHL officiating contracts is an outstanding accomplishment for Nick, Hayden and Chris, and a proud moment for our program," said OHL Director of Officiating Conrad Haché. "They understood the game at a high level as players and have put in an incredible amount of work to learn a completely different side of it as officials. Their progression shows there is another meaningful path in hockey after a playing career ends, and we're proud that the OHL could play a role in preparing all three for this opportunity." Isaacson, an Oakville, Ont. native, completed his first season as an OHL referee in 2025-26 following an extensive playing career that included four seasons in the league. The 6-foot-3 forward joined the Peterborough Petes during the 2015-16 season and remained with the club through parts of four seasons before finishing his OHL career with the Mississauga Steelheads. Isaacson appeared in 224 regular season games, recording 43 goals, 61 assists and 104 points, while adding four points in 16 playoff contests. He went on to play at the University of Guelph before beginning a professional career that included stops in the ECHL and American Hockey League. Isaacson returned to the OHL in a different role in 2025-26, immediately joining the league as a referee and earning a spot at the CHL/NHL Officials' Development Camp during his first season. Verbeek completed his second season as an OHL official in 2025-26 and his first as a referee after making the transition from playing to officiating following the conclusion of his professional career overseas. Originally selected by the Soo Greyhounds in the fourth round, 71st overall, of the 2013 OHL Priority Selection, the Kingston, Ont. native played five seasons with Sault Ste. Marie. Verbeek appeared in 250 regular season games, recording 49 goals, 60 assists and 109 points, along with 17 points over 47 playoff appearances. His playing career continued professionally for six seasons, including time in the American Hockey League and ECHL along with stops in Slovakia and Germany. Following his final playing season with Eispiraten Crimmitschau of Germany's DEL2 in 2023-24, Verbeek moved into officiating and quickly progressed through the OHL ranks. Martenet, an Indianapolis, Ind. native, completed his first season as an OHL linesperson in 2025-26 after an extensive playing career of his own. The 6-foot-7 defenceman was selected by the London Knights in the fourth round of the 2014 OHL Priority Selection and spent parts of three seasons in the league with London and the Ottawa 67's. Martenet appeared in 158 OHL regular season games, recording 10 goals, 29 assists and 39 points, while adding eight points across 34 playoff contests. Selected by the Dallas Stars in the fourth round, 103rd overall, of the 2015 NHL Draft, Martenet went on to play professionally in the American Hockey League and ECHL before continuing his career overseas. His final playing season came with the Glasgow Clan of the Elite Ice Hockey League in 2024-25. Martenet joined the OHL officiating staff the following season and was selected for the CHL/NHL Officials' Development Camp just months into his first year as a linesperson. The advancement of Isaacson, Verbeek and Martenet continues a recent run of OHL officials moving into the NHL system. Linesperson Shawn Oliver earned a minor-league NHL contract ahead of the 2025-26 season following five seasons in the OHL. The OHL Officiating Program provides officials with regular coaching, evaluation and game experience while working alongside veteran officials throughout the regular season and playoffs. Opportunities such as the annual CHL/NHL Officials' Development Camp provide an additional connection between the CHL's development programs and professional officiating. Isaacson, Verbeek and Martenet will begin their first seasons in the NHL officiating system in 2026-27.
