Saturday Highlights: Fronts are for real

First the Erie Otters and now the Kitchener Rangers.

The Kingston Frontenacs slayed another Western Conference dragon on Saturday night on home ice as rookie Austin Grzenia scored the first two goals of his OHL career in a 5-3 victory over Kitchener.

Frontenacs captain Roland McKeown had two goals and an assist as Kingston handed the Rangers their first regulation loss of the season to improve to 11-5-1-1.

The Kingston win came in one of eight games around the league on a busy Saturday.

KINGSTON 5 KITCHENER 3 – The Kitchener Rangers are no longer undefeated in regulation, seeing their record slip to 13-1-3-0 in a 5-3 loss to the Kingston Frontenacs on Saturday. Kingston rookie Austin Grzenia scored the first two goals of his OHL career while Carolina Hurricanes prospect Roland McKeown had two goals and an assist. Frontenacs goaltender Lucas Peressini made 31 saves for the win as the Frontenacs improved to an East Division leading 11-5-1-1 on the year.

GUELPH 5 FLINT 3 – The Guelph Storm shook off a 10-game losing streak as Tyler Boston scored twice in a 5-3 win over the Flint Firebirds. Overaged goaltender Justin Nichols made 28 saves while Tyler Hill, James McEwan and Garrett McFadden also had goals. Firebirds forward Will Bitten had a goal and two assists in the loss.

BARRIE 4 SAULT STE. MARIE 1 – Kevin Labanc scored twice, recording the 18th point in his past eight games as the Colts outran the Soo Greyhounds 4-1 on the road. Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood made 34 saves while Michael Webster and Cordell James also found the back of the net. Barrie currently leads the Central Division with a record of 11-6-0-0.

WINDSOR 6 ERIE 4 – Arizona Coyotes prospect Christian Fischer recorded his first OHL hat-trick while overaged veteran Bradley Latour had a goal and three helpers as the Windsor Spitfires downed the Erie Otters 6-4. Goaltender Garret Hughson made 35 saves while Cole Carter and Jalen Chatfield also scored for the Spits who improve their record atop the West Division to 11-4-3-0. Alex DeBrincat scored a pair of goals and Dylan Strome had three assists in the Erie loss while blueliner Erik Cernak scored his first OHL goal.

SAGINAW 4 OSHAWA 3 – The Saginaw Spirit prevailed in a second straight comeback victory, defeating the Oshawa Generals 4-3 on home ice. Devon Paliani tied the game at three on a late second period powerplay before Matthew Kreis buried the winner with 2:52 left in the third. A rough n’ tumble affair also saw Saginaw’s Blake Clarke register a goal and an assist while goaltender David Ovsjannikov made 30 saves for the win. Oshawa captain Michael Dal Colle had a goal and an assist in the loss.

MISSISSAUGA 5 SUDBURY 1 – Damian Bourne and Thomas Lattavo each scored twice as the Mississauga Steelheads defeated Sudbury 5-1 on the road. Goaltender Jack Flinn made 29 saves to earn first star honours while draft eligible forward Michael McLeod also scored for the fish. Mississauga improves to 9-8-0-2 on the year.

OWEN SOUND 6 HAMILTON 2 – The Owen Sound Attack limited the Hamilton Bulldogs to 20 shots, defeating them 6-2 on home ice as defencemen Santino Centorame (2G), Damir Sharipzyanov (1G, 2A) and Thomas Schemitsch (1G, 1A) combined for seven points in the victory. Veteran Bryson Cianfrone had three assists and goaltender Daniel Dekoning made 18 saves to record his first win in an Attack uniform. Hamilton’s Stephen Harper followed up Friday’s hat-trick with a goal and an assist in the loss.

NIAGARA 5 PETERBOROUGH 1 – Vince Dunn and Graham Knott each had a goal and an assist while Brent Moran made 25 saves in a 5-1 Niagara IceDogs victory over the Peterborough Petes. The Dogs went 4-for-8 on the powerplay as Josh Ho-Sang had three assists in their fifth straight win, improving to 9-7-1-0 on the season. Buffalo Sabres prospect Eric Cornel had the lone goal for the Petes.
