Rangers win OHL Championship
Kitchener – The Kitchener Rangers won the J. Ross Robertson Cup as OHL champions with a 4-1 win over the Ottawa 67’s on Saturday. Kitchener won the OHL Championship Series four games to one.
Rangers captain Derek Roy scored the game-winner in the second period. Roy, who scored nine goals and 23 assists for 32 points in 21 games, won the Wayne Gretzky “99” Award as the most valuable player in the playoffs.
67’s forward Corey Locke led all playoff scorers with 19 goals and 19 assists for 38 points in 23 games.
Mike Richards, Gregory Campbell and Evan McGrath also scored for the Rangers, who won their third OHL championship in franchise history. They last won the Robertson Cup in 1982.
The Rangers open the 2003 MasterCard Memorial Cup on Saturday against the host Quebec Remparts.
