CAN U18 falls 4-3 to SWE at Ivan Hlinka
BRECLAV, Czech Republic – Sweden scored three straight goals en route to a 4-3 win over Canada at the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka under-18 men’s hockey tournament on Tuesday.
Jared McCann (Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds) opened the scoring for Canada at 3:14 of the first period before Sweden countered with three straight to take a 3-1 advantage into the third.
Sam Bennett (Kingston Frontenacs) scored a power play goal at 3:54 of the third to bring Canada to within one, but Sweden replied with a power play goal of their own less than a minute later.
Spencer Watson (Kingston Frontenacs) added another power play goal midway through the third and finished the game with two points. Bennett also tallied an assist to go along with his goal, while Brendan Lemieux (Barrie Colts) and Jake Virtanen (Calgary Hitmen) also picked up assists for Canada.
Julio Billia (Chicoutimi Sagueneens) made 20 stops in goal despite the loss.
Canada opened the tournament Monday with a 4-0 win over the Czech Republic and will face Switzerland on Wednesday.
In other Ivan Hlinka tournament action, the United States defeated Russia by a 4-2 score with goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic (Plymouth Whalers) making 35 saves and earning Player of the Game honours.
