Attack Score 6-5 Overtime Win Past Majors
Rogers OHL Championship Series Game 3:
Owen Sound Attack 6 vs. Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors 5 OT
Matt Petgrave blasted a slapshot from just inside the circle 56 seconds into overtime to lift the Owen Sound Attack to a 6-5 win over the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors. The Majors now lead the best-of-seven series 2-1.
“I just picked off a pass and put it on net,” Petgrave said of his overtime heroics. “It was nice to come in here and get the win.”
The Attack let a 5-3 lead slip away in the third period when Brett Flemming scored his first of the playoffs at 1:37, followed by a goal from Devante Smith-Pelly, his second of the game and 11th of the playoffs at 14:38 to tie the score 5-5.
“We need to play a full 60 minutes,” Flemming said following the game. “There is no special message to our guys for next game, we just need to be better.”
The teams skated to a 3-3 tie after 20 minutes in a wild first period with four power play goals and one scored shorthanded.
Andrew Shaw opened the scoring with his first of two goals for the Attack even strength at 5:17, with Robby Mignardi scoring on a breakaway shorthanded with his 13th of the playoffs. Jesse Blacker also found the net for the Attack for the second straight game. Rob Flick, Maxim Kitsyn, and Smith-Pelly all scored power play goals in the first for the Majors.
“We knew this would be an uphill climb,” Attack Head Coach Mark Reeds said. “We thought we could play better after the last game and I thought that second period was the best we have played all series. We forechecked and created chances and found the back of the net.”
Michael Zador got the start in goal for the Attack and made 32 saves in the win, while JP Anderson suffered just his second loss of the playoffs with 21 saves.
“Obviously down 2-0 we knew they would come at us with their best game,” said Majors Head Coach Dave Cameron. “Full marks to them.”
Game four of the Rogers OHL Championship Series takes place Sunday afternoon at 4:30 pm from Owen Sound and can be seen live on Rogers Sportsnet.
