Wolves add goaltender Marcus Vandenberg from Niagara
The Sudbury Wolves have bolstered their depth in the crease, acquiring 19-year-old Niagara IceDogs netminder and reigning OHL Goaltender of the Week Marcus Vandenberg on Friday. In exchange, Sudbury dealt a pair of third round selections to the IceDogs, including Brantford’s in 2024 and Sudbury’s in 2027.
Vandenberg comes off a big weekend that saw him backstop the IceDogs to their first pair of consecutive victories this season, besting Kitchener and Peterborough. The 5-foot-11, 172Ib. Dorchester, Ont. native is 3-7-2-0 on the season with a 3.96 goals-against average and .889 save percentage.
“We are very excited to add Marcus to our team. He has had some outstanding games this season,” said Sudbury Wolves VP & General Manager Rob Papineau. “Most recently Marcus has come off a pair of wins against two of the top teams in Kitchener and in Peterborough which he was named first star honours from both games and was named the OHL Goalie of the Week. With Jakub (Vondras) going to the World Juniors on Sunday we have eight games over that break, and we really felt a need to add depth in goal for what we are looking to accomplish this season.”
Vandenberg was acquired by Niagara this past summer after spending his first two OHL seasons with the Kitchener Rangers. He went 9-9-1-0 with a 3.31 goals-against average and .898 save percentage in 23 games with the Blueshirts in 2022-23. Vandenberg was Kitchener’s ninth round (177th overall) pick in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection, and had a successful 17-year-old season with the GOJHL’s Stratford Warriors in 2021-22, being named to the GOJHL Midwestern Division’s all-rookie team.
Vandenberg will join the Wolves for their home game against Kingston on Sunday afternoon. He’ll wear #37 with his new club.
In a corresponding move, the IceDogs have recalled goaltender Charlie Burns from the Fort Erie Meteors of the GOJHL. A Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. native and ninth round pick of the IceDogs in 2022, Burns is 16-3 with a 2.32 goals-against average and .921 save percentage in 19 games with Fort Erie this season. He appeared in three games with the IceDogs in 2022-23.
