Wednesday Highlights: Sting’s fifth straight win gives them 30

 

SARNIA 6 – FLINT 3
Calgary Flames prospect Adam Ruzicka (21, 22, 23) scored his first career OHL hat-trick and added an assist as the Sarnia Sting doubled up the Flint Firebirds 6-3 on the road. Sarnia took out a 3-0 lead on goals from Ruzicka, Theo Calvas (3) and Drake Rymsha (21) before Flint cut the deficit to one on markers by Connor Roberts (9) and Maurizio Colella (16). Sarnia surged ahead in the opening half of the third period as Ruzicka scored twice and Michael Pezzetta (17) also tallied. Ty Dellandrea (15) added a Flint goal but it was too little, too late. Sarnia captain Jordan Kyrou had three assists on the night while Calvas finished with a goal and two helpers and Jonathan Ang had two assists. Colella led the way for Flint with a goal and two assists. Sarnia’s Aidan Hughes stopped 29 shots to get the win as the Sting won their fifth straight and 30th of the season. Flint falls four a fourth straight outing.

OTTAWA 6 – MISSISSAUGA 2
Colorado Avalanche prospect Travis Barron (10, 11, 12) scored three times and added an assist to lead the Ottawa 67’s to a 6-2 win over visiting Mississauga. Tied 2-2 early in the third period, the 67’s struck for four unanswered to put the Steelheads on ice. Sasha Chmelevski (18, 19) scored twice, joining Barron in reaching the mark of 50 career OHL goals. Austen Keating (16) found the empty net for Ottawa late in the third while Tye Felhaber picked up a pair of assists in the win. 67’s goaltender Olivier Tremblay was a highlight in the win, turning aside 34 shots as Mississauga’s Nicolas Hague (22) and Owen Tippett (20) were the only shooters to solve him. Mississauga outshot Ottawa 36-31 but the 67’s managed to go 2-for-3 on the power play. Ottawa improves to 18-20-3-2 for fourth in the East Division while Mississauga falls to 18-24-0-1, five points back of third place North Bay in the Central.

KITCHENER 6 – NIAGARA 0
Mario Culina stopped all 34 shots he faced to earn his first OHL shutout as the Kitchener Rangers rolled to a 6-0 road win in Niagara. The Rangers scored three times in the first period as Givani Smith (11), Kole Sherwood (16) and Riley Damiani (15) all capitalized. Nick McHugh (8), Eric Guest (3) and Adam Mascherin (30) also scored for Kitchener. Damiani finished with a goal and two assists on the night as the Rangers won despite being outshot 34-32. The win puts an end to Niagara’s three-game winning streak as the Midwest Division-leading Rangers stretch their lead to nine points with a 28-14-2-0 record. The IceDogs hold a two point lead over second place Barrie atop the Central.

OWEN SOUND 2 – HAMILTON 1
The Owen Sound Attack scored a big Wednesday win, keeping pace in the Midwest Division with a 2-1 victory over the CHL’s fifth-ranked Hamilton Bulldogs. Returning home after four straight on the road, the Bears keep themselves within striking distance in the division as they play five of their next seven games on home ice. Rookie netminder Mack Guzda earned first star honours with a 22-save performance as the Attack had goals from Jackson Doherty (3) and Nick Suzuki (19). Matthew Strome (26) provided the lone goal for Hamilton as the Bulldogs saw a three-game winning streak snapped. Owen Sound sits eighth in the Western Conference but is within eight points of home ice advantage and five points behind seventh place Guelph. The Bulldogs lead the Eastern Conference by seven points over second place Niagara.
