Wednesday Highlights: Firebirds finish strong in Owen Sound

A clash of two Top 10 teams saw the Flint Firebirds soar to a 4-3 road win over the Owen Sound Attack as Belarusian winger Evgeniy Oksentyuk (5, 6) scored the overtime winner off an end-to-end rush, helping the ‘Birds win their fifth straight contest. Flint captain Ty Dellandrea (7) tied things up with 10 seconds left in the third period to force overtime where Oksentyuk’s second of the night boosted the Firebirds to 9-3-0-1 to start the season. Riley McCourt (4) also scored for Flint as the Firebirds trailed 2-0 after two periods before scoring three times in the third. Attack captain Aidan Dudas (5, 6) scored twice as his team earned a point in the overtime loss. Deni Goure (3) also scored for Owen Sound as the Bears outshot the Firebirds 38-27. Flint’s Anthony Popovich turned in another strong performance, stopping 35 of 38. The Attack fall to 8-3-1-1 and remain atop the Midwest Division.

HAMILTON 5, BARRIE 4
Arizona Coyotes prospect Jan Jenik (8, 9) scored twice and added an assist as the Hamilton Bulldogs slipped by the visiting Barrie Colts 5-4 in a Wednesday morning school day game. Overage defenceman Kade Landry (2) scored the third period game winner while Arthur Kaliyev (16) and Logan Morrison (6) also lit the lamp, helping the Bulldogs win their fourth straight at home. Tyson Foerster (12, 13) scored twice for Barrie while Jacob Tortora (1) and Matej Pekar (13) also found the back of the net. Barrie’s Jason Willms had two assists as the Colts outshot the Bulldogs 32-29 but saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. Hamilton’s Marco Costantini earned the win with a 28-save showing opposite Barrie’s Jet Greaves who made 24 saves in the loss. The game was played before a largely student-driven crowd of 5,476 as Hamilton improved to 6-8-1-0.
