U SPORTS Report: Jan. 10, 2024
A total of 228 OHL alumni are playing in the U SPORTS men’s hockey ranks this season. Throughout the year the U SPORTS Report will keep tabs on former OHL names doing great things in the OUA, AUS and Canada West ranks on the road to the 2024 U SPORTS University Cup to be held from March 14-17 in Toronto, Ont.
UNB REDS REMAIN ON TOP
The UNB Reds men’s hockey team continues their outstanding season as the only undefeated team in the country, building on their 20-0-0-0 record with a pair of wins at home over the weekend. Hosting the StFX X-Men on Friday, Soo Greyhounds graduate Cole MacKay and former London Knights duo Cody Morgan and Sean McGurn each contributed a goal, while Kitchener Rangers alumnus Mike Petizian added a pair of markers to the 6-2 win.

The Reds continued their winning ways with a 7-3 win over the Dalhousie Tigers on Saturday, as former London Knights and Barrie Colts forward Jason Willms registered a three-point night scoring two goals and an assist, while Sudbury Wolves graduate Macauley Carson tallied a pair of goals to earn first star honours.

U OF T TAKES DOWN NIPPISSING
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues secured back-to-back wins on their road trip to North Bay over the weekend. Defeating the Nipissing Lakers 4-3 on Friday, the win saw contributions from former Saginaw Spirit forward Nick Wong, North Bay Battalion alumnus Christian Stevens, Sudbury Wolves graduate Emmett Serensits, former Mississauga Steelheads blueliner Ryan Barbosa, and London Knights graduate Billy Moskal. The Varsity Blues closed out their weekend with a 3-2 overtime win against the Lakers on Saturday, as Moskal registered three assists on top of former Sudbury Wolves forward Owen Robinson‘s overtime winner.

THUNDERBIRDS RISE IN CANADA WEST RANKS
The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds are on the rise, finding themselves in Canada West’s second place spot. Defeating the University of Manitoba in back-to-back showings over the weekend, Flint Firebirds alumnus Jack Wismer remained consistent, registering an assist in Friday’s victory, followed by a goal in Saturday 3-1 win over the Bisons.
OTTAWA CLINCHES TWO-WIN WEEK
The University of Ottawa Gee-Gees had a perfect start to the new year, clinching two wins last week. Defeating their crosstown rival Carleton Ravens 4-1 on Thursday, the win saw a goal from former Sudbury Wolves and North Bay Battalion forward Brad Chenier. Ottawa returned to action on Sunday, visiting the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks to earn their second win of the week. A scoreless game, the Geegees would defeat the Ridgebacks in a shootout, moving up to first in the OUA East standings.

ACADIA’S PERFECT WEEKEND ON THE ROAD
The Acadia Axemen had a successful week on the road, defeating the Saint Mary’s Huskies and UPEI Panthers. Former Peterborough Petes blueliner Hudson Wilson contributed an assist on Wednesday, as the Axemen took down the Huskies 2-0. Acadia closed out their perfect week with a 4-3 shootout win over the Panthers on Saturday.
