Third period goals from Dellandrea and Bahl push Canada past Finland
Third period goals from Ty Dellandrea (Flint Firebirds) and Kevin Bahl (Ottawa 67’s) pushed Canada past defending gold medalist Finland 4-2 in IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship pre-tournament action in Ostrava, Czech Republic on Monday.
With Canada carrying a 2-0 lead into the third period, Finnish goals from Joonas Oden and Patrik Puistola knotted the score at two before Canada prevailed with goals just over a minute apart in the third period’s 12th and 13th minutes of action.
Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Nolan Foote (Kelowna Rockets) scored second period goals just under four minutes apart to put Canada in the lead.
Foote finished with two goals and an assist while Alexis Lafreniere (Rimouski Oceanic) had a pair of helpers.
Nico Daws (Guelph Storm) turned in a perfect first half of the game before Joel Hofer (Portland Winterhawks) surrendered a pair of goals in the latter half.
Kari Piiroinen (Windsor Spitfires) allowed two goals in his half of the game in the Finnish crease.
Canada rounds out its pre-tournament schedule with a 2-0 record and now prepares to face the United States to open the preliminary round of the 2020 IIHF World Juniors on Boxing Day at 1:00pm ET in Ostrava.
