It’s playoff time, and Ben Gaudreau is in the building.
That’s right Otters fans. Gaudreau, the overage netminder who hasn’t played since Jan. 21st, took the ice for morning skate at the Aud on Friday morning ahead of Game 1 of Erie’s first round series with the Kitchener Rangers.

It remains to be seen if the former seventh overall OHL Draft pick will play on Friday, but there’s a glimmer of hope for an Otters club that has gone through somewhat of a goalie carousel in the second half of the season. Hats off to overage newcomer Ethan Fraser, who has stepped in and helped the Otters secure the fifth spot in the Western Conference with a 6-1-1-2 record, 2.96 goals-against average and .904 save percentage after spending the season with the Lindsay Muskies of the OJHL.
While Otters fans can hope the goaltending scenario is beginning to clear up, there’s another big question mark in first-liner Carey Terrance, who hasn’t played since Mar. 14th as the result of a lower body injury. The Anaheim Ducks first round pick has game-breaking speed, and scored 29 goals in 56 games, following up a 30-goal campaign in 2022-23.
With Terrance’s status up in the air, the Otters will rely on a few other names including 2025 NHL Draft prospect Malcolm Spence who put up 62 points (19-43–62) in his sophomore season along with top scorer Pano Fimis (25-51–76), a former second overall OHL Draft pick in 2020. Big winger Sam Alfano took big strides in his development under head coach Stan Butler this season, finishing with 27 goals and 60 points. Don’t forget Erie’s Slovak connection, with Ondrej Molnar (19-33–52) and Chicago Blackhawks second-rounder Martin Misiak (23-24–47) knowing where to find each other. Feel-good story Dylan Edwards has also given Erie an offensive option with 22 goals over 38 games.
The Rangers, by comparison, have considerably more fire-power with 52-goal scorer and Canadian World Junior representative Carson Rehkopf leading the attack. Hometown overage product Matthew Sop is a fan favourite at the Aud and for good reason, finishing his final OHL season with 90 points (43-47–90). Montreal Canadiens first round pick Filip Mesar (19-33–52) has shown he can be a game-breaker in the OHL while the Rangers have no shortage of supporting shooters in Adrian Misaljevic (23-35–58), Seattle Kraken first rounder Eduard Sale (15-23–38) and energetic winger Luke Ellinas (16-17–33). Kitchener will have 6-foot-6 winger Trent Swick (25-37–62) back for Game 4 of the series as he serves the remainder of a five-game suspension. Overage winger Mitchell Martin (10-8–18) appears to be sidelined by injury once again. Martin missed close to four months to injury this season, managed to return to the lineup for five games but hasn’t appeared in a game since Mar. 9th.
Hunter Brzustewicz can dictate the pace of the game from the back end, and might just be Kitchener’s biggest weapon in this series. The Calgary Flames prospect tied a Rangers franchise record for defencemen this season, finishing with 92 points (13-79–92) over 67 games. Hard-hitting defence partner Matthew Andonovski (7-25–32) also brings a presence to this series. He has the unique distinction of finishing in the OHL’s top-three for both plus/minus (+58) and penalty minutes (124) in 2023-24.
Erie has some big question marks. Kitchener didn’t have the greatest finish to the regular season with four straight losses. Three of the meetings between these two teams this season went to overtime. How does that all shake down? Let’s drop the puck tonight and find out!
