OHL Weekend Notebook (Oct. 26): Firebirds make history, Rivalry Week delivers
Here’s a look at some of the top storylines from an action-packed Rivalry Weekend across the league.
Firebirds off to historic start
The Flint Firebirds continue to make history, improving to 9-2-1-0 for their best start in franchise history. Flint has now earned points in eight consecutive games and sits tied with the Soo Greyhounds for first place in the West Division. The Firebirds also opened the I-75 Divide Cup with three straight wins over the Saginaw Spirit for the second consecutive season. Flint capped off the weekend with a 1-0 victory over the Greyhounds on Sunday, as Trenten Bennett turned aside all 29 shots he faced for his second career OHL shutout and first with the Firebirds – helping him earn OHL Goaltender of the Week honours.
Sting snap skid against rival Knights
The Sarnia Sting opened Rivalry Week with a statement victory, erasing a 4-2 deficit with four unanswered goals to defeat the London Knights 6-4 and snap a four-game losing streak. Easton Walos played a key role in the comeback, recording four assists before adding two more in the following contest. Walos is now riding an eight-game point streak, collecting 16 points over that stretch, and sits just two points back of the OHL scoring lead with 22.
McGregor makes power-play history
Former first-overall selection Kaden McGregor is settling in nicely with the Brantford Bulldogs, scoring four power-play goals in a single game, including a first-period hat trick, in Friday’s 8-2 win over Brampton. The performance marked the first time an OHL player had scored four times on the man advantage in one contest since 2015.
Otters continue to climb
The Erie Otters collected five of a possible six points over the weekend, improving to 7-5-2-0 as they continue to build momentum. Linemates Michael Dec and Mclean Agrette have been leading the charge offensively, pacing the club with 22 and 19 points, respectively. Dec recorded five goals over two games, including a hat trick against Niagara on Saturday before adding two more against Brampton on Sunday. Agrette also delivered a four-point performance (2-2–4) on Sunday, while Dec’s strong play earned him OHL Player of the Week honours.
Spirit duo continues to dominate scoring race
Saginaw Spirit linemates Dima Zhilkin and Braidy Wassilyn continue to set the pace offensively across the OHL, sitting tied atop the league scoring race with 24 points (12-12–24) apiece. Zhilkin extended his league-leading point streak through the opening 13 games of the season.
Frontenacs sweep rivalry series
The Kingston Frontenacs came out on top in both of their Rivalry Week matchups against the Ottawa 67’s, earning a 4-2 victory on Friday before following it up with a convincing 6-1 win on Sunday. Kingston put an end to Ottawa’s four-game winning streak and seven-game point streak in the opening contest before scoring six unanswered goals in Sunday’s rematch. The Frontenacs improved to 9-5-0-0 with the pair of victories.
Late-game heroics
The weekend delivered plenty of last-second drama, with Windsor’s John McLaughlin and Owen Sound’s Lucian Bernat coming through in the clutch. McLaughlin scored twice for the Spitfires, including the power-play game-winner with less than one second remaining in regulation. Meanwhile, the Attack pulled off a dramatic comeback of their own, as Jake Crawford tied the game with 52 seconds left in regulation before Bernat completed his two-goal performance with the overtime winner with just one second remaining.
Shorthanded goals steal the spotlight
Sunday’s Highway 7 showdown between the Guelph Storm and Kitchener Rangers featured three shorthanded goals, including two scored just nine seconds apart. Guelph’s Ryan Roobroeck and Jaakko Wycisk struck in quick succession, while Tanner Lam added a shorthanded marker, adding to his four points afternoon, for Kitchener. Roobroeck also completed a hat trick with the overtime winner, helping the Storm bounce back from Friday’s loss and split the Rivalry Week series.
Vaughan leads Battalion back into win column
The North Bay Battalion bounced back from a three-game losing streak with consecutive victories over Sudbury and Barrie, led by a strong offensive showing from Parker Vaughan. The forward recorded six points (3-3–6) across the two contests, highlighted by a two-goal, three-point performance against the Wolves that included the game-winner and a third-period penalty-shot goal.
Kwajah earns Rookie of the Week honours
Sudbury’s Kash Kwajah earned Make Space OHL Rookie of the Week honours after recording four points (3-1–4) across three games, helping the Wolves collect four of a possible six points. The 16-year-old scored in all three contests, including a game-winner against North Bay and a penalty-shot goal against Oshawa.
Humphries shuts the door
Matthew Humphries delivered a standout performance between the pipes on Friday, turning aside all 30 shots he faced for his first career OHL shutout as the Oshawa Generals blanked the Peterborough Petes 5-0. The victory snapped a four-game winless streak for the Generals, who have now earned four points over their last three contests.
