OHL Weekend Notebook: November 25, 2019
The OHL Weekend Notebook recaps the weekend that was with news, information and interesting facts from both on and off the ice. Here are 10 of the leading stories from this past weekend.
Wright leads Frontenacs to four in a row
Rookie Shane Wright had a weekend for the books. The 15-year-old scored the shootout winner in the club’s 4-3 victory over the Peterborough Petes on Thursday, and led the team to wins on Friday and Sunday with consecutive two-goal performances. Wright has now amassed 18 points (10-8–18) in 19 games this season, which puts him second in Kingston scoring behind Zayde Wisdom, who has picked up five points (3-2–5) in his last three games.
While the Fronts remain at the bottom of the East Division with a 5-14-2-2 record and only 14 points on the season, they’ll look to keep themselves in the win column as they host the red hot Ottawa 67’s in a midweek cross-division matchup this Wednesday.
#OHL MISS/KGN: Four wins in a row for @KingstonFronts as Shane Wright becomes 2nd rookie to reach 10 goals this season after putting up consecutive 2-goal games and 3rd on year. First Frontenacs designated rookie with consecutive 2-goal games since Radek Smolenak 10/29-30/04

Knights skate to four straight wins
The Knights picked up three huge wins on the road this week, pushing them into a first place tie with Guelph atop the Midwest Division.
Connor McMichael surged past the 50-point mark, collecting his third hat-trick of the season on Friday in what would amount to an eight-point weekend (3-5–8). Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Liam Foudy put up seven-point on the weekend (3-4–7), led by a four-point night in his team’s 5-2 win in Mississauga. Veteran defenceman Ryan Merkley also posted seven points (2-5–7) over the course of the week.
London’s impressive weekend rounded out with a 4-0 shutout in Erie on Sunday, an OHL first for newly acquired goaltender Dylan Myskiw.
The Knights have scored at least four goals in all four wins, and will be back at home on Friday where they play host to the West Division-leading Windsor Spitfires.

OHL shutouts on display
A few firsts were on hand this week for Ottawa 67’s goaltender Will Cranley, Oshawa goaltender Zachary Paputsakis, and Dylan Myskiw of the London Knights. The 17-year-old Cranley made 31 saves in Ottawa’s 2-0 win over the Mississauga Steelheads Saturday afternoon, boosting his record to 5-1-0-0. The Gens held the Sudbury Wolves off the scoresheet in a 7-0 victory on Sunday, while Myskiw stopped all 26 shots in London’s 4-0 blanking of the Erie Otters. Myskiw’s record with the Knights improves to 7-1-0-0, having been acquired from the Sarnia Sting last month after spending parts of three seasons with Victoria, Brandon, and Edmonton in the WHL. Paputsakis rocks a 5-2-0-1 record through 11 games in his rookie season with the Gens.

Jenik and Kaliyev keep point streaks alive
Hamilton’s dynamic duo continues to soar atop the OHL scoring chart with a combined 14 points this past week. Jan Jenik’s point streak reached 23 games with an assist in Saturday’s 4-3 shootout win over the Guelph Storm, while Arthur Kaliyev extended his point-streak to game number 13 with two assists in the same contest. Kaliyev, who was drafted by the L.A. Kings 33rd overall last June, currently leads the OHL scoring race in a 51-point tie with London’s Connor McMichael and sits first in goals with 27 on the season. Jenik’s 50 points places him third in scoring, just under McMichael and teammate Kaliyev. His 31 assists place him first among all OHL players.

Bulldogs spoil Storms’s win streak
Speaking of point streaks, though Guelph was able to earn a point in Saturday’s 4-3 shootout loss at FirstOntario Centre, their 10-game winning streak was halted by the Hamilton Bulldogs. Storm winger Eric Uba had an impressive weekend, shaking off a pointless three games and scoring a pair of goals in Friday’s 3-0 shutout over Sarnia. The Kitchener, Ont. native scored one more goal in Saturday’s loss.
The Storm will look to bounce back on Wednesday as they hit the road for Mississauga, hoping to extend their point streak to 12 games.

67’s on a roll, tied for first with Petes
The 67’s continued to skate past their opponents, earning a big four points on the week and remaining atop the league alongside the East Division rival Peterborough Petes. Coming off a 6-3 victory over the Sudbury Wolves Thursday morning that saw multi-point performances from NHL Draft hopefuls Jack Quinn and Marco Rossi, both players carried that momentum over to Saturday afternoon, scoring the club’s only two goals in a 2-0 blanking of the Mississauga Steelheads on Sportsnet.
The Barber Poles will head to Kingston Wednesday before facing off in back-to-back home games this weekend.

McCourt picks up big eight points
Riley McCourt’s three goals and five assists over three games earned him OHL ‘On the Run’ Player of the Week honours. After a four-point showing Wednesday night against the visiting Sarnia Sting, the OHL vet from St. Catherines, Ont. came up big once again in Flint’s 4-3 tilt against the Soo on Friday with two goals and an assist. McCourt also scored the game winning goal on Saturday, pushing his team to a 5-4 win over Owen Sound.
