Generals acquire Predators prospect Andrew Gibson from Greyhounds
The defending Eastern Conference champion Oshawa Generals are signalling they want to finish the job this spring, making a big addition on Tuesday morning in a trade with the Soo Greyhounds.
The Generals have added Canadian National Junior Team blueliner Andrew Gibson in exchange for 16-year-old forward Brady Smith and eight draft picks. The 6-foot-3, 210Ib. right-shot defender from Windsor, Ont. gives the Generals another top-tier name on the back end as he’ll join an already capable group that includes Toronto Maple Leafs first round pick Ben Danford, Columbus Blue Jackets pick Luca Marrelli and veterans Luca D’Amato and Zack Sandhu.
Gibson, from LaSalle, Ont., has produced seven points (4-3–7) through 26 games this season. He’s put up 72 points (23-49–72) over 145 regular season games since being selected by the Hounds in the fourth round (67th overall) of the 2021 OHL Priority Selection.
“I am very excited to get things going in Oshawa,” said Gibson after learning of the move. “I have heard nothing but positive remarks from people connected to the organization. I am looking to come in and do whatever I can do to help the team and win a championship.”
Going the other way, Brady Smith was the 17th overall pick of the 2024 OHL Priority Selection from the North York Rangers organization. The Whitby, Ont. product has seven points (2-5–7) through his first 37 OHL contests. Smith led the 2024 OHL Cup with 10 goals in six games.
“It is a privilege to be able to represent the Soo Greyhounds,” said Smith of the move. “I’m super excited about the vision Kyle Raftis and John Dean have in place to bring another championship to the city. I’ve heard nothing but great things about the Soo and can’t wait to meet everyone and get to work.”
Prior to being selected in the first round of the 2024 OHL Priority Selection, OHL Central Scouting cited Smith as possessing a shot that is “second to none” and described him as having “scoring abilities that make him a very intriguing prospect that should adapt well to the next level.”
Smith, who may be referred to as Brady T. Smith by broadcasters, joins Brady R. Smith in the Greyhounds lineup. He’s expected to join the Greyhounds on Wednesday night in Sudbury while Gibson is slated to make his Oshawa Generals debut on Friday night in Ottawa.
