Fifth overall CHL Import Draft selection Evgeni Oksentyuk commits to Firebirds
Flint, Mich. – The Flint Firebirds announced today that forward Evgeni Oksentyuk (pronounced Ev-Gen-E, Ahk-Sent-E-Uhk) has committed to an Ontario Hockey League Standard Player Agreement and education package with the Firebirds.
Oksentyuk, 18, was selected by Flint in the first-round (5th overall) of the 2019 CHL Import Draft in June. The Brest, Belarus native led the Belarus National Team at this year’s 2019 IIHF U18 World Championship with six points (3G, 3A) and 22 shots on goal in just five games, en-route to being named Belarus’ top forward at the prestigious tournament.
At the 2019 IIHF U20 World Championship Division 1A, Oksentyuk lit-the-lamp once in five games and had a plus-1 rating as an underager with the Silver Medal winning Belarus National Team.
“We are happy to officially welcome Evgeni to the Flint Firebirds’ organization,” said Flint Firebirds Vice President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Barclay Branch. “Evgeni is a world class player that will make a significant impact in our lineup moving forward.”
While skating in Belarus’ top men’s professional league at the age of just 17, Oksentyuk recorded 18 points (6G, 12A) in 49 games with HC Shakhtyor Soligorsk, an affiliate of the KHL’s HC Dynamo Minsk.
The 5-foot-7, 154-pound forward tallied an impressive 21 points (14G, 7A) in just 15 games with the Belarus’ U17 National Team and 15 points (7G, 8A) in 12 games with the Belarus’ U18 National Team during the 2017-18 season.
Oksentyuk was invited to the Montreal Canadiens development camp this past June and will arrive in Flint for training camp Aug. 26. He will be the second Belarus native on the Flint Firebirds roster this season, joining countrymate Vladislav Kolyachonok.
