HISTORY
Erie, Pennsylvania, located along the shores of Lake Erie, is a city known for its strong sense of community and deep hockey tradition. The Erie Otters have been a staple of the OHL since 1996, providing fans with thrilling moments and developing a steady stream of elite talent. The Otters have twice captured the prestigious J. Ross Robertson Cup as OHL champions, winning in the 2001-02 and 2016-17 seasons. They also claimed the Wayne Gretzky Trophy as Western Conference champions in 2014-15 and 2016-17, along with the Hamilton Spectator Trophy for finishing first in the league standings in 2000-01, 2015-16, and 2016-17. Known for producing top-tier players who have gone on to significant professional careers, the Otters are a vital part of Erie’s sports culture. The Otters have retired a total of three numbers including those of Brad Boyes (#16), Vince Scott (#18) and Connor McDavid (#97).

EDUCATION
Current Erie Otters high school players attend Fairview High School. Over the years, the Otters have seen several players excel academically. Erie is also home to Penn State Behrend and Gannon University, respected institutions that offer excellent post-secondary education opportunities for players pursuing academics alongside their hockey careers.

ARENA
Erie Insurance Arena is a premier sports and entertainment venue located in downtown Erie, Pennsylvania. Originally opened in 1983 and extensively renovated in 2013, the arena offers a hockey seating capacity of approximately 6,700, providing an electric atmosphere for Erie Otters games. In addition to serving as the home of the Otters, the arena hosts a wide range of concerts, family shows, and community events, making it a vital part of Erie’s entertainment landscape. Cool Feature: Erie Insurance Arena is located directly adjacent to UPMC Park (formerly known as Jerry Uht Park), home of the Erie SeaWolves, AA affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. The Erie Otters have developed some of the most talented players in the hockey world, including former exceptional status player Connor McDavid, a five-time Art Ross Trophy winner, three-time Hart Memorial Trophy winner, four-time Ted Lindsay Award recipient, and 2023 Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy winner, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation. Other standout alumni include Dylan Strome, a dynamic playmaker and former OHL scoring leader, and Ryan O’Reilly, a Stanley Cup champion and Conn Smythe Trophy winner, Alex DeBrincat, a former CHL and OHL Player of the Year, and Connor Brown, a former OHL scoring leader known for his two-way play and leadership. First overall 2025 NHL Draft pick Matthew Schaefer is one of the brightest young stars in the NHL, doing big things with the New York Islanders.
