67 Members of OHL’s Overage Class of 2011 Continue Hockey and Academic Careers
Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League is proud today to announce that 67 overage players that competed in the league as 1990-born athletes during the 2010-11 OHL season will be pursuing various hockey and academic opportunities in the 2011-12 season.
25 overage graduated players have signed professional hockey contracts including 11 players that have signed NHL entry-level contracts. That group of 11 players includes Jason Akeson of the Kitchener Rangers who earned the Leo Lalonde Memorial Trophy as the OHL’s Overage Player of the Year and signed an entry-level contract with the Philadelphia Flyers. The 25 players will compete in various professional leagues including the American Hockey League and the East Coast Hockey League.
36 overage graduated players will also be continuing their hockey careers while accessing their academic scholarships and competing in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport hockey system this season. That group includes six players that have committed to the University of Western Ontario Mustangs of the OUA, and six players that have committed to the AUS’ Saint Mary’s University Huskies including OHL Playoff MVP Robby Mignardi of the Owen Sound Attack.
In addition, six overage graduated players will be accessing their academic scholarships and continuing their education in various institutions this school year.
Last season the OHL awarded a record total of 363 academic scholarships including 219 to graduated players.
