Wolves win feisty affair
The Sudbury Wolves made it a season sweep against the Plymouth Whalers on Friday night besting the Whalers by a final score of 6 -4.
The Whalers and Wolves have a history from the 2007 OHL Finals, however, the teams played a feisty contest usually reserved for division rivals.
The Wolves jumped out a 1 – 0 lead late in the first period on a goal by KYLE SHAW, who was assisted by ANDREY KUCHIN.
In the middle frames, the teams traded goals with the Pack taking a 3 – 2 lead into the second intermission. Scoring for the Wolves were newly appointed assistant captains MIKE LOMAS (KRISTOFF KONTOS and JOSH MCFADDEN) and JOHN MCFARLAND with a powerplay goal assisted by JOSH LEIVO and MCFADDEN.
The Wolves continued to find the back of the net early in the final period with a shorthanded marker by Captain MARCUS FOLIGNO assisted by LOMAS, and the two combined again a few minutes later this time with LOMAS potting a goal with the assist from FOLIGNO and NICK TRECAPELLI. With the score 5 – 2 for the Pack, the Whalers responded with two goal of their own to close the gap to 5 – 4. The Wolves regained the two goal lead on a goal by ANDREY KUCHIN, his first in the OHL, at the 18:46 with the assist by RYAN LOPES. That was as close as it would get as the Wolves went on to defeat the Whalers by the final score of 6 – 4.
Sudbury Wolves netminder ALAIN VALIQUETTE had a solid outing in goal making 32 saves for the win.
The games three stars were MIKE LOMAS (1), MARCUS FOLIGNO (2), and JAMES LIVINSTON (3).
NOTES: The 50/50 prize winner was BOB KIRSCHNER of Sudbury with winning ticket number 19612. The Wolves will look to make it a clean sweep of the weekend when they host Christian Thomas and the Oshawa Generals at the Sudbury Arena on Saturday night at 7:00pm.
