Wolves Lead Bell Challenge Cup
The Sudbury Wolves travelled to Sault Ste. Marie on Wednesday to take on the Soo Greyhounds in the fifth installment of the BELL CHALLENGE CUP. The Pack jumped out to the early lead and went on to win the game by a final score of 6 – 3.
With 8 regulars out of the lineup due to injuries and suspension, the Wolves called up players to fill the lineup and went on their way.
After a scoreless first period, the Wolves dug deep and came out swinging in the second frame scoring three unanswered goals to take a 3 – 0 lead. Scoring for the Pack were ANDREY KUCHIN (SAMUEL SCHUTT, JACOB HARRIS), NICHOLAS BAPTISTE (MACKENZIE BRAID), and MICHAEL SGARBOSSA (RYAN HANES, CHARLIE DODERO). Forward ANDREY KUCHIN left the game midway through the second period after a big hit, and did not return.
The Wolves added two more goal early in the third period from HANES (BAPTISTE, JOSH LEIVO) and NATHAN PANCEL (SCHUTT, DANNY DESROCHERS) to take a commanding 5 – 0 lead. With less than five minutes to go in the frame, the Greyhounds scored two quick goals to cut the Wolves lead to 5 – 2 before PANCEL (LEIVO, BAPTISTE) scored his second of the night to make it 6 – 2. The Hounds added another goal in the final minute but it was too little too late as the Wolves went on to win 6 – 3 and take a 7 – 5 lead in the Bell Challenge Cup. Forward MICHAEL SGARBOSSA was shaken up on a big hit midway through the frame and left the game.
Starting in goal for the Wolves was JOEL VIENNEAU, who had solid night making 27 saves for the win. Soo netminder Jack Campbell made 31 saves in the loss.
The Wolves also swept the three stars with NICHOLAS BAPTISTE as 1st Star, RYAN HANES as 2nd Star, and MICHAEL SGARBOSSA as 3rd Star.
The final game of the Bell Challenge Cup is set for Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at the Sudbury Arena. Be sure to get your tickets so you don’t miss any of the action.
Before that, the Wolves will play a double header weekend at home with Barrie Colts visiting on Friday in an all important divisional matchup – game time is 7:35pm. On Saturday, the Wolves will celebrate VALE SUDBURY SATURDAY NIGHT with a matchup agains the Sarnia Sting – game time is 7:00pm.
