Wolves Hooked by Steelheads
The Sudbury Wolves were in Mississauga on Monday for a Family Day match-up with the Steelheads. The Wolves came into Monday’s game looking to rebound from a tough loss to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Saturday night, while the Steelheads were coming into this contest with some momentum after edging the league-leading Erie Otters 5-4. The Sudbury Wolves sported a potent offense throughout the game, but ultimately fell to the Steelheads by a final score of 7-5. TROY TIMPANO made 36 saves on the night including a number of acrobatic stops. JOSEPH MURDACA received his first win of the year between the pipes for the Steelheads and made 34 saves on 39 shots.
The first period included quite a bit of back and forth as both teams had impressive scoring chances early on. The Wolves opened the scoring with a laser shot from the point by KYLE CAPOBIANCO. DAVID LEVIN and DMITRY SOKOLOV assisted on the powerplay goal. Seven minutes later, SEAN DAY scored for Mississauga to tie the game up a one goal apiece. Late in the period, a streaking ALEXANDER NYLANDER scored for the Steelheads to extend their lead to 2-1. Shots at the end of the period were 13-11 in favor of the Wolves.
The second period also began with a plethora of scoring chances for both teams. RYAN VALENTINI continued his 5 game point streak on the powerplay early on. MATT SCHMALZ and DAVID LEVIN picked up the assists on the goal. The Wolves kept pouring it on as MICHAEL PEZZETTA also continued his impressive play in February with his 7th goal of the year. However, Mississauga was not done as NICOLAS HAGUE scored two goals within 2 minutes of each other to regain their lead at 4-3.
Sudbury came out strong at the start of the third period. MIKKEL AAGAARD scored his 20th goal of the season, which was assisted by ZACH WILKIE. With the score 4-4, the Wolves scored again to go ahead 5-4 on a goal by first year DMITRY SOKOLOV who potted in his 19th goal of the season. The Mississauga Steelheads fired back as DANIEL MUZITO-BAGENDA scored on the powerplay to tie the game at 5-5. Late in the period MASON MARCHMENT scored for the Steelheads to give them a late lead. JOSH BURNSIDE added an empty net goal for Mississauga to finalize the game at 7-5. Shots at the end of the game were 42-38 in favor of the Steelheads.
