Wolves Defeat Generals in Home Opener
The Sudbury Wolves opened up their 2012-13 Ontario Hockey League season Friday night with a hard fought 4-2 win on home ice against the Oshawa Generals.
The Wolves opened the season in style as they shared their golden moment in Russia this summer with fans in attendance. Prior to puck drop the Wolves sent their championship banner to the rafters to immortalize their triumph of the Junior Club World Cup for Team Canada.
BOONE JENNER opened up the scoring for the Generals with a nice feed from rookie centre MICHAEL DAL COLLE. The goal marked Jenner’s third of the season through two games. DOMINIK KUBALIK (1st round, CHL Import Draft) responded for the Wolves at the 16:18 minute mark of the first to tie the game up at one heading into the break. The Wolves outshot the Generals in the first by a margin of 10-6.
KUBALIK continued to make a good first impression on the Wolves faithful this evening as he potted his second of the game at the 2:48 mark of the second period. His two-goal effort would earn him first star honours for the contest. The Generals would pull even midway through the second as SCOTT SABOURIN scored the equalizer on the power play with 11:35 remaining in the second frame. The Wolves however would restore their one goal lead minutes later when sophomore forward NATHAN PANCEL banged home a rebound to beat Gens net minder DANIEL ALTSHULLER. The Generals outshot the Wolves 11-10 in the second period.
The third period remained scoreless until the 19:28 mark when MICHAEL KANTOR scored an empty net goal to seal the deal. The Generals however did not go down without a fight in the third as they held the edge in shots 13-7.
Both teams’ goaltenders were strong between the pipes in tonight’s contest making key saves for their respective teams. JOEL VIENNEAU was the games second star making 28 saves in goal.
The Wolves will take their 1-0 record into Sunday’s contest as they look to avenge their first round defeat when they host the Brampton Battalion at 2:05 P.M. STUDENT DAY: All students presenting their students card will receive admission to the game for only $5. (College, University & High School Only)
