Wolves Pick Up Point in Overtime Loss in Nation’s Capital
The Sudbury Wolves traveled to Ottawa Sunday to wrap up their Eastern Conference road swing. It made for an exciting game where Peter Stratis faced off against his former team at TD Place to wrap up the three-game weekend road trip. Despite solid efforts from the Wolves, they fell 4-3 in overtime to the high flying 67’s with Kody Clark scoring the overtime winner. David Levin scored two, earning second star of the game and Macauley Carson notched one in the loss. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 45 saves.
The 67’s put the pressure on early with a huge shot on Luukkonen from Marco Rossi but UPL shut the door. After 10 minutes of play, Macauley Carson opened the scoring by firing a big shot on Cedric Andree. Jack Thompson assisted. David Levin gave the Wolves a 2-0 lead 5 minutes later. With just over 2 minutes left in the period, Graeme Clarke struck and scored to cut the Wolves lead by one.
In the second, Levin stuck in between four 67’s players, netted his second of the game from the hash marks to put the Wolves up 3-1. The intensity of the game picked up after Drake Pilon and Kevin Balh both dropped the gloves. Late in the second, Noel Hoefenmayer fed Tye Felhaber who beat Luukkonen to bring the score to 3-2.
At the midway mark in the third, Merrick Rippon took home his first goal of the season and tied the game at 3. With Luukkonen continuously getting knocked down with players crashing into the net, he continued to make outstanding saves to keep the Wolves in the game. As the period wound down, the Wolves were able to make the necessary defensive plays to carry the game into overtime.
In the extra frame, Luukkonen made three huge back to back saves right off the start. Unlucky, Carson took a penalty for hooking that gave 67’s the man advantage. UPL made another seven big saves however, the Wolves unable to get a shot on net. Midway through the extra frame, Kody Clark recorded the game winner.
The Wolves will return to action on Friday November 2nd when they host the Erie Otters for Rod Schutt’s jersey retirement night and #HuntForACure in support of Northern Cancer Foundation. A pre game ceremony will welcome Rod and his family and former teammates attending the game including: Wes Jarvis, John Baby, Randy Carlyle, Mike Foligno and Ron Duguay. Game time is 7:05pm. It will be a double-header weekend as the Wolves return to the ice on Sunday November 4th for the annual Remembrance Day game at 3:05pm. Tickets are at greatersudbury.ca/tickets.
