Storm rested and ready
By Tony Saxon, Guelph Mercury
Sometimes a week off can come at just the right time.
After a pair of tough losses last week, to London in overtime and to Plymouth in a shootout, the Guelph Storm have a week off before hosting the Peterborough Petes on Friday.
Other than the annual Christmas break, the break matches the team’s longest layoff of the season. They also had a week layoff after Game 1 of the campaign.
Saturday night Guelph will play in Erie.
“This is the first time in a while we’ve had a long week of practices and we also got the rest we needed and the practices we needed. Time will tell, but hopefully it pays off,” Storm coach Scott Walker said after practice on Wednesday.
“As a team I think this break came at the right time and allows us to hammer on some things in practice that we just haven’t been able to do.”
Having lost a pair of games heading into the extended break has made the layoff a little more productive, Walker said. Had they continued their winning streak (which was snapped at 10 games by the London Knights), the players might not have been quite as focused during this week.
“The attention to detail was a little bit sharper,” Walker said. “If you come into this week on an 11-0 run, you never know what a week like this ends up being.
