Storm makes room by dropping Molotilov
By Tony Saxon, Guelph Mercury – Evgeny Molotilov’s days as a member of the Guelph Storm appear to be over.
Storm coach/general manager Jason Brooks said Wednesday that he has informed Molotilov’s agent that the team will be either trading or releasing the 6-foot-3, 195-pound Russian defenceman.
“I don’t think I’m going to be bringing him back,” Brooks said. “Given the situation and given the circumstances of our team, we just decided to go in a different direction.”
That different direction includes both the defence and the team’s European situation, he said.
Dropping Molotilov will leave Guelph with two open European spots in advance of the Canadian Hockey League’s import draft at the end of the month.
Brooks, who attended the World under-18 Hockey Championships in Belarus, said he is talking with agents and National Hockey League teams in attempts to land one or two European players that can help the team win this year.
“We’re talking with everyone,” he said. “Whether it’s a draft-eligible player, a late birthday or a drafted player, you just never know,” Brooks said of the possibilities.
