Storm gets vital win in Erie
By Tony Saxon, Guelph Mercury – Scott Kosmachuk got a chance to redeem himself Sunday against the Erie Otters and took full advantage.
The Guelph Storm winger was sitting in the penalty box when the Otters scored twice early in the third period to turn a comfortable 4-1 Storm lead into a 4-3 nailbiter.
But later in the period he burst down the right wing and outmuscled Erie defenceman Adam Pelech before finding the top of the Erie net for what would turn out to be the winning goal in a 6-4 Storm victory.
Zack Mitchell iced the game with an empty-netter.
“I’ve been taking a lot of penalties lately so it was nice to step up with a big goal,” said Kosmachuk, who also assisted on the first two Storm goals.
“I didn’t even know what I’d done to get the penalties. I was on the bench and the linesman came over and called it.”
Kosmachuk was given a four-minute high sticking penalty after clipping an Erie player several seconds earlier during a fight for the puck on the ice.
Spilled milk. The main thing for the Storm was coming away with two points, no matter how it got done.
The win, combined with a Sault Ste. Marie loss on Saturday and a Windsor Spitfires win Sunday, leaves Guelph all alone in eighth spot in the conference, two points up on the Sault and one behind Windsor.
All three teams have three games remaining.
Next big night on the schedule is Wednesday, when Guelph hosts Erie and the Greyhounds and Spitfires play one another.
