Storm Draft Flashbacks… 1994

The 2012 OHL Priority Selection will be conducted online on Saturday, April 7. With the sixth choice of the draft, Guelph Storm GM and Vice President Mike Kelly along with his scouting staff will certainly have the opportunity to add an elite player to the club for what looks like an exciting season in 2012-13. 

GuelphStorm.com looks back at OHL Priority Selections in team history including several that were headed by Kelly during his last tenure with the Storm.

1994 OHL PRIORITY SELECTION

After three straight first round picks in the top 5, Mike Kelly and his scouting staff would pick late in the first round thanks to the Storm’s third place finish in the Emms Division in 1993/94 (tied for 6th overall in OHL).  Hosted in Belleville’s Quinte Sports Centre, the Sarnia Sting opened the draft by selecting Jeff Brown, who would go on to play four seasons in the league between Sarnia and London before playing with several minor pro teams in his nine year pro career. 

Much later in the first round, the Storm would select Brian Wesenberg from Peterborough.  Wesenberg made an impact in the league notching nearly a point per game over his three year career, while agitating opponents on a nightly basis.  After getting drafted in the 2nd round of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, Wesenberg played a single game in the NHL.  Along with Wesenberg, five other players spent their entire three plus year career in Guelph, while 10 different players skated in the OHL.

A total of four players selected in 1994 saw action in the NHL including co-Rookie of the Year winners Wesenberg and Dwayne Hay (79 NHL games) (pictured), Chris Hajt (6 NHL games) and Marty Reasoner (544 games active) who chose to play in the NCAA.
