The home team remains undefeated in the Highway Six rivalry.
With the Guelph Storm and the Owen Sound Attack facing off for the fifth of eight meetings this season on Saturday night, the home team had yet to lose.
The Attack kept that pattern in tact, taking a 6-2 victory on home ice over the Storm.
Jaden Lindo led the way with back-to-back first period markers, while Luke Burghardt and Nic Sicoly scored for the Storm. Sicoly, tying things up at two in the second period, netted his second shorthanded marker in just as many nights.
Between the pipes, Michael Giugovaz was busy, turning aside 43 of 49 shots, while Daniel Dekoning faced 18 shots, stopping 16 in the win.
The Storm opened the scoring early, with Burghardt taking full advantage of a turn over via the Attack’s Jacob Friend, scoring his second in just as many nights.
Owen Sound took over from there, going on to outshoot Guelph 16-6 in the opening frame. Lindo capitalized on two of the 16 shots, first tallying his 12th of the season putting a one-timer past Giugovaz to tie the game up at one-a-piece with 10:10 played.
Over four minutes later, the Storm took a too-many-men call, followed by a bench minor served by Isaac Ratcliffe, giving the Attack a full two minute five-on-three advantage.
The Attack only needed 31 seconds to take advantage, with Lindo pocketing his second of the night to give the home team a 2-1 lead 15:16 into the period.
Penalty trouble continued for the Storm in the second as Burghardt took a delay of game penalty 9:08 into the frame, but Sicoly had other ideas for Guelph’s penalty kill. 12 seconds into the call on Burghardt, James McEwan found the Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario native for his fifth goal of the season, tying the game up at two shorthanded.
Just 18 seconds after the tying marker, however, a roughing call handed to C.J. Garcia gave the Attack their second five-on-three advantage of the contest. This time Santino Centorame capitalized, regaining Owen Sound’s one goal lead with a blast for his 12th of the season on the power play.
The remainder of the middle frame featured two more goals from the Attack, who started to pull away on the ice and on the scoreboard. Justin Brack, left alone in front, netted the fourth goal for the home side with under four minutes remaining in the period, while Thomas Schemitsch scored his sixth of the season at the 17:41 point of the second.
Taking a 5-2 lead into the third, the Attack controlled much of the remainder of the game, only to add one more to the board as Liam Dunda grabbed his fifth of the season with 45 seconds left in the contest.
With the 6-2 final in favour of the Attack, the home team has not lost in the Highway Six rivalry yet this season.
The Storm are back in action on Friday, February 12 hosting the Sarnia Sting at the Sleeman Centre.
