Storm – 67’s In-Game
Friday night at the Sleeman Centre, the Ottawa 67’s made their lone visit of the season to the Sleeman Centre. The Storm would grab an early 1-0 game only to see the visitors reply with five unanswered on their way to a one-sided 6-3 win.
Just 2:25 in, Guelph jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Kennedy created a 67’s turnover and broke away on a two-on-one with Taylor Beck. Kennedy froze the Ottawa blueliner before snapping it past Peter Mrazek in the 67’s goal. The visitors would answer back with a pair of powerplay markers to grab a 2-1 lead at the break. Julien Demers picked up a loose puck in his own zone and legged it the length of the ice before feeding it to Ryan Martindale for a redirect past Matt Hoyle. Just over 10 minutes later, a pair of Storm alumni teamed up to give Ottawa their first lead of the game. Just inside the Ottawa blueline, Anthony Nigro slid a pass to Travis Nigro who finished with a backhand inside the post to make it 2-1.
In the second period, Ottawa jump out to a 3-1 lead on Thomas Nesbitt’s ninth of the season. After Martindale’s slapshot bounced off the end boards, Nesbitt would scoop up the rebound on the other side of the goal and bang it into the empty Storm net. The 67’s made it four unananswered at 15:11 of the second on another rebound off the end wall that found a 67’s stick at the side of the net. This time it was Andrew Merrett who picked up the loose puck and fired it home. Before the end of the frame, Ottawa added their fifth of the night with their third powerplay marker. With Cody McNaughton and Conor O’Donnel in the box, Gibbons would notch his second of the night with a shot through traffic that hit Cody St. Jacques in the shoulder and found the back of the net. Shots on goal after two were 27-14 in favour of Ottawa.
Down 5-1 entering the third, the Storm would need some magic to earn a point. Mat Sisca gave the home side hope with his 6th of the season from Taylor Beck to cut the lead to three, but Ottawa restored their four goal lead only 1:42 later. Dalton Smith notched his seventh of the campaign after St. Jacques stopped a couple of Ottawa shots before the puck slid past him to Smith for the easy tap in. Guelph’s Ben Chiarot picked up his second of year on a slapshot with Beck picking up his second point of the game. Shots in the final twenty were 15-11 for Ottawa.
The Storm will finish a busy three-in-three weekend with a Saturday night trip to Owen Sound and a Sunday afternoon visit to Kitchener to face the Rangers. Guelph will make it four in a row away from the Sleeman Centre next weekend with road games in Plymouth and Oshawa. Then on Wednesday, November 18th, the Brampton Battalion will march into the Eye of the Storm for the club’s first of two ‘Wecession Wednesdays’ of the year. All regular priced lower bowl tickets will be just five dollars for the game. For tickets call or visit the Storm box office or buy online at GuelphStorm.com.
