Guelph Storm defenceman Nathan Martine very quietly passed a significant career milestone last Thursday in Peterborough, and quietly is just the way he wanted it.
The Storm’s stalwart defenceman played in his 300th Ontario Hockey League game, joining a rather elite club.
“It’s kind of neat,” the 20-year-old Port Colborne native said yesterday. “There’s not too many players been able to do that. But it’s really not that big of a deal.”
Not always in the right place at the right time, and usually in demand by the team dealing for him, Martine has been traded three times in his career. After games against Sarnia Friday and London Monday, he has now played 302 games (321 with playoffs). Those games have been played in the jerseys of Barrie (89), Mississauga (96), London (5) and Guelph (112).
“I’ve always been a positive guy,” Martine said, “and I suppose I’d rather be a guy traded for the right reasons rather than being traded for being in trouble or causing controversy.”
Martine doesn’t regret his nomadic OHL career.
