Latta steps up for Storm
By Tony Saxon, Guelph Mercury –
Michael Latta, who had been in a terrible scoring slump of late, scored three times in the first period and later added an assist in a 6-3 win over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
The win leaves Guelph seven points back of Owen Sound for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference with Guelph having three games in hand.
“Michael Latta had a very good weekend,” said Storm assistant coach Chris Hajt, who handled the team’s coaching duties on their two-game weekend road trip. Head coach Jason Brooks was home nursing a bad back that he will have surgery on Tuesday.
“The thing we liked most about Michael’s game Saturday was that he was the complete player. He was super on offence, but he had a solid defensive game as well,” Hajt said.
Latta’s hat trick in the Sault gave him five on the weekend. He scored twice in Friday’s loss to Saginaw. In his previous 13 games prior to last weekend Latta had scored just once in his past 13 games.
Hajt said all the team’s veterans had solid games in the Sault.
“The leadership group stepped up and got it done, they made sure everyone stayed focused and played a full 60 minutes.”
