Ryan Merkley invited to Hockey Canada’s Under-18 Summer Training Camp
Hockey Canada announced today they have invited Guelph Storm defenceman Ryan Merkley to Team Canada’s summer training camp for the Under 18 team that would take part in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup.
Merkley, was drafted first overall in the 2016 OHL Priority Selection and had a record-setting rookie campaign. The Mississauga, Ontario native led all OHL rookies with 55 points (12 goals and 43 assists) in 62 games played, finishing eighth overall among all OHL defenders. He became the first rookie in franchise history to lead the team in scoring and was the first OHL defenceman since London’s Rick Corriveau in 1987-88 to lead all rookies in Scoring.
The winner of the Storm’s Top Scorer Award, Tony Camilleri Playmaker Trophy, the Fan Club’s Most Popular Player and the Wellington Motors Rookie of the Year, went on to be named to the OHL’s First All-Rookie Team while winning the OHL’s Emms Family Award.
The Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup will be co-hosted by the Czech Republic and Slovakia in August.
