2018 OHL Combine Skills Testing
The Ontario Hockey League hosted the first day of the ninth annual OHL Development Combine at Oshawa’s Tribute Communities Centre.
76 players (36 forwards, 24 defencemen, and 16 goaltenders) born in 2002 had the opportunity to showcase their off-ice athleticism to OHL member team personnel with results distributed to every OHL member team General Manager to assist in their evaluation for the OHL Priority Selection to be held on Saturday April 7, 2018.
“The most important takeaway from the skills testing is the experience,” said Joe Birch, OHL Senior Director of Player Development and Special Events. “The various components are designed to prepare a player for what they may encounter as they advance in their careers, while the data collected can assist with personal development heading into an important summer of training.”
Off-ice drills included Drop, Reactive, Repetitive, and Counter Movement Jumps onto Force Plates, Single and Double leg Broad Jumps, Medicine Ball Tosses, Pro-Agility Sprints, Pull-Ups, the Wingate Bike Test, and 20M Sprints using special 1080 Sprint technology that adds resistance to measure power and force.
On-ice testing drills included a 30M Sprint Forward with and without the puck, 30M Backwards with and without the puck, Weave Agility with and without the puck, and Transition Agility with and without the puck.
All tests were performed with players wearing Zephyr Heart Rate Monitors.
Off-ice testing was conducted by Kinduct Technologies with on-ice testing performed by Okanagan Hockey Group, who operate the WHL Combines.
