Storm vs. Battalion – In-Game
Wednesday night at the Sleeman Centre the Storm put their two-game win streak on the line against the Brampton Battalion. After jumping out to an early 1-0 lead on Sam Lofquist’s first in a Storm uniform, Guelph would surrender five of the next six markers in dropping a 5-2 decision.
The Storm hit the ice with only ten forwards for the contest with rookies Carter Sandlak and Zack Mitchell joining Matt Kennedy and Michael Latta on the unable to play list. After defenceman Matt Maione picked off a Brampton clearing attempt, he fed Lofquist who took a quick step in and fired a snapshot over Patrick Killeen’s shoulder for his first OHL marker. The Storm would hold the one goal lead almost ten minutes until Sean Jones notched the equalizer. After a pair of Storm defenders overplayed Scott Tanski on the rush and he fed Jones all alone in front of Cody St. Jacques for an easy goal. Before the end of the frame, the Battalion would gain their first lead converting a turnover at the Storm blueline. Thomas Stajan picked off a pass attempt and dished to Stephon Thorne with 12 seconds remaining in the period with Thorne going high glove side to make it 2-1. Shots on goal in the first were 9-6 in favour of Guelph.
Coming out of the first break, the Battalion would add to their lead quickly with a shorthanded marker at 3:34 when Scott Tanksi scooped up a turnover at his blueline and quickly turned it around for a breakaway attempt making it 3-1 with an unassisted tally. The home side would cut the lead to 3-2 moments later on the powerplay with newcomer Lofquist firing a point shot that was deflected in close by Conor O’Donnell. Brampton’s Barclay Goodrow restored the two-goal lead with just under five minutes to play in the stanza with a one-timer off a Matt MacLeod feed. The Battalion outscored Guelph 2-1 in the second and outshot them 11-7.
The finaly twenty was much of the same with the Storm offence stymied by the Battalion defence. Phillip Lane was the lone goal scorer in a third period that saw Brampton double Guelph in shots on goal by a 10-5 margin. Lane’s fifth of the season came moments after the Storm failed to clear the zone with Brad Albert keeping it in and hitting Thomas Stajan with a quick pass. After St. Jacques kicked out Stajan’s attempt, Lane pounced on the rebound and quickly tucked it in to make it 5-2.
Friday night, the Storm will welcome the Soo Greyhounds for a 7:30 start. Friday’s game will be the annual Red Friday game in support of local military members that are currently serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. Family members of the local military men and women will be on hand selling t-shirts and encourage fans attending the game to wear red to show their support. Prior to the game a puck drop ceremony will be held with local armed forces members that are on leave from active duty.
