SmartStop Recap – More Than a Game
Mississauga, ON – The Mississauga Steelheads took to the ice on Sunday afternoon for Superhero Day as they played for Reese Meyer of Caledon East against the Kitchener Rangers. The Steelheads honoured Reese and his family before the game in an on-ice ceremony. For more information on Reese and his story, please click here.
Kitchener had the first powerplay opportunity of the game, as the Steelheads headed to the box for hooking. The Rangers capitalized, as Greg Meireles received a bounce pass off the end of the boards from Riley Damiani and one-timed it past Kai Edmonds. Kitchener increased their lead to two goals, as Declan McDonnell found Mike Petizian on a 2-on-1, who chipped the puck past Edmonds. Late in the first, the Rangers came down the ice on a 4-on-1 making a nice passing play to make the score 3-0. The Steelheads had an opportunity to climb back into the game, as the Rangers went to the penalty box for high-sticking. Mississauga was unable to score and headed into the first intermission down by three.
With the Steelheads in the penalty box, Nic Canade put the team on his back, as he burst into the offensive zone 1-on-2 and wired a wrist shot past former Steelheads goaltender Jacob Ingham to cut the Rangers lead to two goals. The Rangers regained their three-goal lead, as Donovan Sebrango took a shot that bounced over the shoulder of Edmonds and trickled into the back of the net. The Steelheads headed into the third looking for a miraculous comeback.

Ty Collins started the comeback push early in the third, as he fired a shot over the shoulder of Ingham to put the Steelheads within two. Near the midway point of the period, Cole Schwindt scored one of the finest goals you’ll see, going between the legs to get past the Rangers defence and lifted a backhander behind Ingham, as it was all of a sudden a one goal game.

With under a minute to go, it was again Cole Schwindt who scored his second of the period as he fired a one-timer past Ingham to tie the game at four. The rest of regulation would solve nothing, as these teams needed overtime to decide a winner. The Steelheads came back from a three-goal deficit to start the third period to force OT.

45 seconds into overtime, Harley fired a cross-crease pass over to Schwindt who made no mistake beating Ingham, as the Steelheads comeback was complete. It was Schwindts third goal of the game for the hat trick, his third in the last month.
