SmartStop Post Game Recap – Steelheads Bounce Back with Commanding Win Over the Otters
BRAMPTON, ON – Despite playing in back-to-back games, the Brampton Steelheads showed no signs of fatigue at the CAA Centre this afternoon. Fueled by the electric home crowd, the Trout came out determined to bounce back from their two-game loss and an evenly-matched showdown with the Erie Otters was the perfect chance to do just that.
Parker Von Richter wasted no time setting the tone, blasting a slap shot from the blue line that found the back of the net less than five minutes into the game. The goal marked his second of the season and his second goal in a back-to-back game.
Riding the momentum from Von Richter’s early tally, the Steelheads kept the pressure on. Goaltender Zach Bowen stood tall between the pipes, turning aside several dangerous chances, while the team’s crisp passing and strategic playmaking kept the Otters on their heels.
Nine minutes into the period, captain Mason Zebeski extended the lead to 2–0. Kieran Witkowski crossed the puck to Julian Demiglio who’s shot narrowly missed the net but was swiftly scooped up by Zebeski, who buried a short-handed wraparound shot for his second goal of the season.
Tensions flared midway through the period when the Otters’ Ritter Coombs and the Steelheads’ Reed Gee dropped the gloves, each earning major penalties for fighting. On the succeeding faceoff in Erie’s zone, Keaton Ardagh – assisted by Jakub Fibigr and Troy Patton – scored his second goal of the season, making it 3–0 for Brampton.
The Otters finally broke through late in the period. After Gabriel Chiarot was called for tripping at 13:40, Erie capitalized on the power play as McLean Agrette snapped one home with just one second remaining on the man advantage.
The first period ended with the Steelheads holding a commanding 3–1 lead, and the crowd buzzing in anticipation of how this thrilling matchup would unfold.
The Steelheads opened the second period with momentum on their side, earning a power play opportunity less than two minutes in after Erie’s Tyler Challenger was called for tripping. Although Brampton could not convert on the man advantage, they applied relentless pressure – firing several quality shots on net that were turned aside by Otters goaltender Noah Erliden.
Just as the Steelheads began to settle into their rhythm, Erie’s Brett Hammond cut into the lead with a well-placed shot, tightening the score and shifting the game’s momentum.
Despite the setback, Brampton continued to generate offensive chances, peppering the Otters’ net with determined efforts. Though none of their attempts found the back of the net, the Trout showcased strong defensive play, keeping Erie from gaining further ground.
In the final five minutes of the frame, Brampton was forced to dig deep on the penalty kill — first when Peter Green was sent off for tripping, followed shortly by a high-sticking call against Joshua Avery. The Steelheads’ penalty-killing unit held firm, successfully fending off both power plays and closing out the period with their 3–2 lead intact.
Determined to extend their lead, the Steelheads wasted no time going on the attack in the third period. Just two minutes in, Jakub Fibigr fired a slap shot from distance that beat the goalie clean, restoring Brampton’s momentum. Assisted by Parker Von Richter and William Eggleton, Fibigr’s goal reignited the team’s energy and set the tone for a dominant final frame.
Moments later, penalties to Julian Demiglio and Reed Gee forced the Steelheads onto a penalty kill. Despite the Otters’ 5-on-3 advantage, the remaining Steelheads players stood tall, blocking lanes and clearing pucks to keep the Otters from capitalizing.
Once back at even strength, the Steelheads continued to press. From Mason Zebeski to Gabriel Chiarot, Julian Demiglio, and Keaton Ardagh, Brampton generated several dangerous breakaways, each testing Erie’s defense and goaltending.
Their persistence paid off at 6:42, when Manuel Amado – assisted by Ty Daniels – extended the Steelheads’ lead to 5–2. This notably marked Amado’s first career OHL goal. After a scramble in front of the crease, Amado managed to tip the puck past the goaltender. The crowd erupted once the officials confirmed the goal following a brief review.
The Trout were not done yet. Joshua Avery made it 6–2 midway through the frame, finishing a strategic wraparound play assisted by Von Richter. Then, on a late power play, Keaton Ardagh struck again, scoring his second goal of the night, and sealing the Steelheads’ commanding 7–2 victory over the Erie Otters.
The Steelheads will look to carry that momentum into their next matchup on Friday at 7:00 PM, when they face-off the Niagara IceDogs in Niagara.
