Gold Wins 2010-11 Training Camp Squad Series
The third and final squad game took place on Friday morning at the K-Rock Centre to determine the winning team from training camp. On the opening day, the Black team won the opening game, but were soundly beaten by Gold in the afternoon contest to set up Friday mornings tie-breaker game.
Like they did on the first day, the Black side came out strong early on, as Mitch Lebar was robbed on the doorstep by Frank Palazzese of a sure goal. Philipp Grubauer took his turn making some nice saves and keeping the door shut at the other end. Mike Farrell finally broke the game open, scoring his fourth goal of camp and the first person to score on Palazzese, as he tucked a puck home between the legs of Franky. Corey Durocher was the benefactor of a turnover, as he fired a quick shot over the shoulder of Palazzese to give the Black team a 2-0 lead. Grubauer would stop Nathan Moon on a breakaway a short while later, but two goals would be all that was mustered up in the first period, as Black took a 2-0 lead to the intermission break.
The Gold team came out rejuvenated in the second and final period, as Colt Kennedy rung a shot off the crossbar early on. Cameron Odam then took the first penalty of camp, dishing out a big slash of Charles Sarault. Moon jumped up and took the penalty shot award, but was stopped by Craig Wood in the Black net. Shortly afterwards, Kennedy let another quick shot go, that this time was able to get in under the crossbar and cut the lead in half. Alan Quine showcased a bit of his speed, as he stripped Erik Gudbranson of the puck and like a rocket, broke off on a breakaway and scored to tie the game at two. Farrell then missed a golden chance to put Black back in the lead and not long afterwards, the Gold side put home a goal mouth scramble to give them the lead at 3-2. Moon and Sarault then scored back to back goals less than 10 seconds apart to open up a 5-2 lead. Big Mike Cajkovsky snapped one home with under three minutes to play, but Quine scored into an empty net to seal the victory for the Gold team.
There is no afternoon squad game this afternoon, as General Manager Larry Mavety, Head Coach Doug Gilmour and Head Scout Dick Cherry will sit down and have meetings with all the players and more specifically the rookies, as a majority of decisions have to be made by the end of today. Gilmour and the coaching staff will run the remaining players through a small practice in preparation for Sunday afternoons first exhibition game against Ottawa. “Overall I think it was a good camp. We definitely had a lot of the younger guys impress us and some of our vets are showing they’re ready to go,” said Gilmour.
The Fronts and 67’s will hook up at 2:00PM at the K-Rock Centre on Sunday afternoon
